President’s Message

Spring has sprung.  Although the weather is still a little unsettled, we are getting some good running days.  Most of you realize that our Thursday night pre season runs have started.  Please come out and mix with your friends at Shadyside Park.  New this year is the addition of a walking program, with Judy Baylor taking on the chair responsibilities.  We have an exciting partnership established with the Anderson City Park & Recreation Department for our walking program. This is a good opportunity to bring spouses and other family members to the park with you.  Official start of the “points” season is May 10th for both running and walking at Shadyside.  Also, continuing this year, is our Children’s Fun Run.

Indy Mini time is here.  The Anderson Road Runners will have a hospitality tent at the R&R area within Military Park.  All ARRC members, friends and area runners are invited and encouraged to stop by, say hello, and see what we are about.  Most of the Indiana running clubs will be clustered together, so some good networking should take place.

Don’t forget about participating in the 2001 Road Series.  We reduced the required number of races for year-end award qualification to be 6 of the 15 events.  You can volunteer for any (one) series race and still earn points in the series.  See our website for details.

White River Run is June 2nd, and we are going back to a 15K.  The 5K this year will actually be a YMCA run entitled “The World’s Largest Run”.  Check one of the flyers or the web site for details.  As always, we need volunteers, especially out on the course.  If you or a family member or a friend can help, notify one of the officers, or send me an email at rrhrunner@worldnet.att.net.

Notes for the present…

It’s that time of year again; the 2001 Points Races begin on 10 May at 6:00 p.m.  The races will be held each week with the exception of 05 July 2001, that evening will be conducted as a Fun Run.  The last point race of the season will be held on 27 September.  Post season will continue through 25 October with these races beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Bob Kearns has undertaken the task of compiling information on how to mark our course according to USTAF guidelines and has measured and marked the course. The official distance for the one lap is 2.628 miles.

A calendar and sign up board will be available for anyone wishing to sponsor a race this season.  You provide the prize and determine how it is won. Sponsors the past years have presented some really unique gifts, as well as innovative ways for winning.

So far our walking program has increased in size a bit each week.  The work of Judy Baylor and the good weather has helped our turnout.  As Bob mentioned, we have entered into a joint venture with Anderson City Parks and Recreation Department to get information out to the community about our program.  We should begin seeing and hearing more about the walking program in the local news media.  This joint venture will no doubt bring out more walkers.  We look forward to the new faces and friendships.

The Children’s Fun Run (1-mile loop) will begin on 10 May 2001, at 5:30 p.m. and finish on 27 September 2001.  Children under the age of 12 years must compete in a minimum of 10 runs to receive an entry for the grand prize drawing at the end of the season.

Several club members have helped to package and distribute over 5,000 notices about our Fun Run to the elementary schools in Anderson.  Thank you all, for your help and support of our young runners!

The 2001 Road Series is underway with two of the 15 events already run.  However, participants need only complete six of the 15 events in order to qualify for an award.  See the bolded races in the race calendar for the dates and distances. If you have any questions visit our website or contact Wally Post.

Beginning with this issue of THE PACER, only persons who have renewed or joined the Anderson Road Runners Club by 27 April will be receiving the newsletter.  Should anyone mention that they are no longer getting THE PACER, please ask them if they have joined or renewed their membership. Membership applications are available online at www.andersonroadrunners.org or at Shadyside Park Activities Area on Thursday evenings.

Anderson University

Cross Country/ Track & Field

Solid work ethic, excellent team work, and doing the right things for the right reasons have been the foundation of success for the AU CC/Track & Field program for the past 24 years under the leadership of Head Coach Larry Maddox.

Having won 48 conference titles between the men’s and women’s teams in the last quarter century, along with earning 53 All-Americans including two this past fall in cross country (Lisa Nicholson, Highland HS and Michael Watts, Westview HS), prove the program’s consistent excellence cannot be argued against.

However, as much success as the AU program has experienced it’s focus is not on the prize, but on the process that gets one to that destination.    Doing daily what is necessary to improve, having high standards, working together, and being thorough are the program’s focuses.  Success is not just the destination, but the journey.

This is exemplified in the program’s team verse, Psalm 105:44 “they fell heir to what others had toiled for.”  To the team, it means others before us have helped make possible the rewards and positive situation that we now have.  It is then our responsibility to build and improve off this solid foundation.

This philosophy fits in well with NCAA Division III athletics of which Anderson University is a member institution.  Division III institutions are not permitted to grant athletically based aid; however, we do award institutional aid based upon other criteria such as academic test scores and high school GPA’s.  Without the pressure of pay for play the student-athletes are free to enjoy the benefits of collegiate athletics in its purest form.  Competing for personal satisfaction and team honor.

Academically, AU’s 2000 cross country team proved that excelling as student-athletes can be achieved, as the men’s and women’s top seven harriers earned a 3.44 GPA and 3.77 GPA respectively during this past fall semester.  Historically, the CC/Track & Field program has stressed the value of academics and perseverance.   To this day, of all the athletes who have completed their four years of eligibility at Anderson in the last 24 years, only two have failed to graduate.

To remain athletically competitive the AU program has learned to recruit athletes without the lure of money with the simple promise of providing good coaching, a positive atmosphere, all levels of competition, and excellent academics within a Christian Liberal Arts school environment.   Fortunately, Madison County has provided a steady stream of dedicated athletes throughout the years, such as Brian Williams (Lapel) and Dan Combs (Anderson) in the past, and present athletes such as Lisa Nicholson (Highland), Amber Sigler (Frankton), and Jason Medler (Pendleton Heights) all of whom have played and are playing valuable roles on our team.  AU also attracts students from across the state of Indiana and across the country.  A big draw for these individuals is the opportunity to be part of a holistic program that cares about development of one’s mind, body, and spirit.

A firm foundation has been laid.  The Anderson University program looks forward to a bright future as it tries on a daily basis to do the right things for the right reasons.

Coach Maddox and his staff have worked hard to “bring out the best in their runners and at the same time kept a sense of enjoyment in the sport or running.”  The running community is very fortunate to have such programs in our area.  The PACER will be providing more news and information about Anderson University’s running programs and events, as well as getting more involved with our area schools running.  After all we have many “gems” right here in our own area that need more “shining” exposure!
