March - April 2003 |
Race Directors:
Fun Run Director: Frank St. Phillips
Walking Director: Judy Baylor 643-7637
I think February has been tougher than January. I’ve missed my long run two Saturdays in a row and I can’t ever remember that happening before. My advice is to hang in there, get out when you can and count the days until spring.
Speaking of spring, start checking the web site and the ARRC calendar. We’ve got most of our calendar set and it will be here before you know it. Some of the early dates to remember are: April 3 – start of Thursday night pre-season, April 19 – first road series event in Noblesville, May 3 – the Indy Mini and May 8 – start of the Thursday Night Points. If you haven’t sent in your membership renewal, please do so soon; our record keeping is easier and more accurate when we can process these through the mail. Keep in mind that you can download a form from our web site. If at all possible, give us your email address for ARRC NEWS updates and for the (soon to be) electronic Pacer.
For those of us going to the Mini, remember that
your post race celebration fun starts at the ARRC hospitality tent in the
Military Park R&R area. This is a great place to meet family and
friends, enjoy good company, some refreshments and even get a post race
massage. If you want to store your gear at the tent, this is fine; we
will have volunteers there from about
The Anderson Road Runners will again emphasize and encourage volunteerism. Typical situations will include: Thursday Nights, Road Series events, and community track and XC meets. We also will need volunteers for our Indy Mini tent (2 hour shifts) and then for the White River Trail Run on June 7th. Some of the volunteer stints (points series) will be mandatory, so keep up with details on the web site, or check with your race directors. Also, if you are interested, Indy Runners will have a Gatorade station at the 4-mile point at the Mini and is seeking volunteers. If you are interested in that, see the Indy web site: www.indyrunners.org
2003 will be another jammed packed and exciting year for ARRC members.
It makes no difference whether you are a runner or
walker, nor does it matter what pace you may be. We have a place for
you. Sign up, come out and have and have fun!!
Notes for the present…
This year’s annual meeting held on 09 February found a record number of
award winners for both the Thursday Night 1-Lap Series and the Road Series
Races, along with an abundance of great tasting foods. Although the weather did
not help to create a record turnout in attendance, everyone who did brave the
elements enjoyed a warm and friendly evening. Two new
officers were elected, Denise Skillman will serve as the 2003 Secretary
replacing Lori Goodson who stepped down after 3 terrific years and Ron Harmening
takes Jim Hoffman’s spot as At-Large board member. Jim has been very
instrumental in obtaining sponsors and funding for both of ARRC sponsored races
and other activities. In fact Gwinn’s Drug Store, owned by Jim, was responsible
for the hot and tasty chicken served at the annual meeting. Thanks Lori and Jim
for all your hard work and the staple of dinner!
The following are members who were not present to receive their annual awards on February 6th for either an age group prize or a perfect attendance award for Thursday Night 1- Lap Race Series:
Ingrid Childs, Pam Taylor, Patricia Hart, Casey Atchley, Josh Baker,
Brad Dyke,Christopher Sinnett, Ryan
Culy, Tim Swain, Danny Sexton, David Flack, Jim Leffler, Bob Kearns, Charlie
Schwab, Walt Smith, John Maryan, and
Mason Bailey
Please
contact Bob Hart - 653-6304 or rrhrunner@att.net to make arrangements for
getting your award, if possible prior to the start of the racing season. OK to have a friend to this for you, if you
are out of town.
Thursday, April 03rd, marks the beginning of this year’s
Thursday Night 1-Lap Races. The points season will
begin May 08th and end September 25th. No race will be
held on July 03rd. The adult
season fee is $15.00 or 2.00 per race. The student fee, students under age 19,
is $5.00or 1.00 per race. A minimum of 10 races must be ran/walked and you must
be a member of the Anderson Road Runners Club to be eligible for awards.
Complete details can be found on the Anderson Road Runners website.
Once again the officers and race directors are asking for your help in making this year a success by volunteering a small amount of your time or money to one event or area of the club that is of special interest to you. The Anderson Road Runners Club sponsors two races, the White River Trail Run and Run the Mounds, Volunteers are always needed before, during and after the race. Our Thursday 1-Lap Race can always use help with the scoring, awards, and weekly sponsors. The One Mile Fun Run for the children need adults to help supervise and run with the children, as well as, lend a hand with awards, snacks and year-end party. Sponsors go along way to help any of the above functions. Again, we are only as good as our volunteers. The past has provided us many good volunteers, let’s keep up the good work and volunteer our time or money early.
Welcome to our newest members: Wray Jean Cornwell and Elisha McElroy
Notes for the Future…
Wally Post, Road Series
Director, unveiled this year’s race calendar. April 19th marks the
date for the first race. Again, you must be a member of the Anderson Road
Runners Club and a member of the Road Series in order to be eligible for
awards. You will find these races listed
in bold in the race calendar. Full details are listed on the ARRC
website.
Representing the Anderson Road Runners Club this year at the Boston Marathon to be held on April 21, 20003, will be: Nova Filbrun, Mike Hall, Mike Shelton and Frank Tuckerman. Bob Kearns has qualified for this year’s Boston Marathon, but at press time it was not confirmed if he was attending. Good luck runners and have a great race!
For
those Anderson Road Runners Club members who registered for this year’s
Indianapolis Mini Marathon, before the field was filled, you once again will
have the Anderson Road Runners Club tent to visit before and after the
race. We will have the tent staffed with
club members to watch over anything you want to leave while on the course;
light snacks and massages will again be available after you finish. Please be
sure to invite any fellow members as well as friends who run to stop by and
visit…the more the merrier! If you would like to help out in the Anderson Road
Runners Club tent please contact Bob Hart. Several of the registered half
marathoners have discussed and decided that the Anderson Road Runners Club
ought not go unnoticed this year, therefore we are
going to design shirts for all those folks. The short-sleeved shirts that will
carry our club name on the front and a special design for the back. Sizes, price and ordering information can be
obtained online or by calling Robin Gerhart or Bob Hart. Deadline for ordering
along with payment will be due no later than
