Race Directors:
Notes from
the Editor…
As
many of you are aware, Bob Hart’s father suffered a severe stroke on the
Tuesday prior to the Run the Mounds race. (At press time Bob’s father is still
in critical condition.) Bob immediately gathered his support team and
chairpersons in an effort to guarantee a problem-free, safe and fun race for
all walkers and runners. Bob Kearns graciously answered the call to step in as
assistant race director and race director on race day. With all of Bob Hart’s
earlier efforts, work, and the stepped up effort of all the chairpersons and
volunteers this year’s Run the Mounds was again a huge success. Over 400 people endured the temps of a
beautiful Sunday afternoon to walk and run “one of the best groomed trail runs
in the
The overall male winner was Mike Johnson with a time of 28:04 and Rachel Young 36:34 was the overall female winner. In the masters division, Andrea Swartz 38:25 was the female winner and Mark Diveley 29:44 was the male winner. In the race walking division, Paige Truman 32:59 was the overall female and Jerry Lambert 34:04 the overall male.
Working
pre-registration packet pick up, the comments I most often heard were, how
difficult this course was to run/walk, but that the hospitality and sweatshirts
made it all worth the while! It is a
real blessing to be part of a club that works together, runs/walks together in the best maintained state park in
the state, and offers this to all runners/walkers once a year at Run the
Mounds! Thank you to each person who
ran, walked, cheered, volunteered and sponsored this year’s race.
And speaking of races, take a look to see how many marathons and half marathons were represented this fall by members of the Anderson Road Runners Club. We have several first time participants in these events. Take a moment to congratulate these folks when you see them (even if it is not until you are Christmas shopping). It takes valuable time and energy to train and compete in these events. The Anderson Road Runners Club has truly amazing individuals.
Happy trails….Robin
Notes for the present…
Thanksgiving Turkey Trot will be held on
This year’s annual Christmas party will be
held on
The ARRC officers and board of directors has
unanimously agreed that a change in the collection of membership and race fees
is needed. Although exact fees have not been decided on for 2004 we have
decided to get the word out early and often. All membership and one-lap race
fees MUST be received by the ARRC by
Mark 07 February 2004 on your calendar. This
is the date for the Anderson Road Runners annual meeting. Remember it is during
this meeting that election of officers takes place. If you would like to hold
an office/board position or recommend someone for a position please contact
Tommy Goodson. It is always good for any organization to have “new blood” to
help direct our club. Whether you have been along standing member or new to the
club we invite anyone with an interest to step forward. Perhaps you don’t wish
to hold an office or board position but would like to be more involved, please
let any officer know of your desires. During this meeting we will also be
discussing some by-law updates.
Thursday Night Points awards and Road Series
awards will also be presented, as well as a few special awards. Please plan to
attend this evening of food, business, awards and fun. ARRC will again provide
the meat, members need to bring a double-sized covered dish, salad, or dessert
along with drink and table service. Place and time are still being discussed.
Please watch arrcnews for specific information.
Training runs/walks
While
the Anderson Road Runners Club does not have “official” training sites with
runs/walks, one can usually find a partner at

Our
walking group is small, but each one is a dedicated and determined
walker. As you might know some of our walkers were at one time good
runners, but because of injuries turned to walking. This is how our
walking club began. I know it will grow as people realize it can be just
as competitive as running. I have tried to walk with Lori and Gregg and
truly felt it the next day. It is not easy.
Our
group has become real Speed Walkers, not just fast walkers. They go by
the speed walking rules. Ron Wallace has been a great help in showing them
the techniques of speed walking, which they do well.

A word of thanks…
“To
be able to do something for our fine athletes, the walkers and runners of our
club, it was a reward to me to set up the water stops for our Thursday night
races. If I made one foot plant easier or gave one athlete the desire to hang
on to the water stop on a hot evening, my effort was worth the time. There are
no finer athletes in this area than our Anderson Road Runners. No matter where
you run in the pack… the front, the middle or the back, in my eyes you are all number
one!” - “Bud jogger” Stiffler
Also another thank you to the persons/business
for sponsoring a Thursday night race:
Carolyn
McKinney, Bob Hart, Kathy Wehrley/Kristen Henry, John Wulff, Jim Leffler, Dee
Dee Swafford, Bill/Pat Miller, Community Hospital, Keith/Barb Hamilton, and

WALKING THE WALK…
Greetings
to Everyone: Walkers and Runners.
By now we have finished the Thursday night Shadyside
Series and are also winding down the Road Series with a few races left for
2003. I hope that your training is going
injury free and that you are thinking about the HUFF (maybe!).
I promised last article to better
define walking versus running. This is
my attempt to do so. Running is
generally described as flying across the ground with feet impacting the turf in
reckless abandon without one foot being in constant contact with the
ground. Walking is usually having one
foot in contact with the ground at all times.
Race walking is having a portion of one foot in contact with the ground
at all times and, during the stride, the knee of the leg in contact with the
ground must lock straight during the stride.
Sounds complicated I am sure.
Leisure walking is as simple as running; it just comes to oneself
naturally.
Race walking is a bit more
complicated to me. There is not a lot of
the proper form natural to me. It
requires far more concentration to go fast.
Form is a very important element of race walking. Heel striking, stride
length, and rate of foot turnover are essential to fast race walking with a
minimum of leg pain. A favorite quote
from Ron Wallace is “running is like operating a powerboat versus race walking
is like operating a sailboat.” With a
powerboat, you start the engine and go like running. With a sailboat you have to maintain the
sails, adjust the keel, steer the rudder, and determine constantly whether to
tack or jibe. When you loose
concentration during race walking, you generally loose speed.
As complicated as it may sound,
there is nothing more satisfying than a race well walked. It is that much more satisfying that you did
it well. Whether you are racing or
leisure walking, the point is to get out there and do it. Enjoy the fresh air at your favorite place
and do yourself a favor both mentally and physically.
Congratulations to Paige Truman for
making the change to walking with excellent results. She is striding along very well and
fast. Congratulations to Lori Goodson
for first place at the Oliver Winery 5K on a tough course. Congrats to Dave and Kathy Nichols for their
fast finishes and Debbie Smith for placing in her first race at the Oliver
Winery 5K! Yeah it was for the

During a recent… visit with
Sandy Ferris, a lifetime member of the Anderson Road Runners; she shared the
following article with me. After reading this article I once again was reminded
just how fortunate we are to live in such a great country, enjoy the sport of
running and the freedom to run wherever and whenever we please because of men and women such as
these, who also happen to enjoy the same sport.
About
2,000 runners converged on Logistical Support Area Anaconda October 05, to
participate in the inaugural Anaconda Ten Miler.
The run
sponsored by the 3rd Corps Support Command, corresponded with the

“We
wanted to do something this fall to give soldiers an activity to look for to
and train for,” said Maj. Alex Fink, the race director, “something to kind of
get their minds off of being away from home.”
Originally
expected to be a smaller event, the 10-miler quickly ballooned as runner from
posts all over
“There’s
definitely a lot more runners than we expected to see,” said Fink, who said
only 400 to 500 participants were originally expected.
About
1,500 troops registered to run the 10-miler, and organizers said about 500 to 600
more ran unregistered- pumping the total to about 2,000 participants. Some
soldiers ran formations that were unregistered, and officials said there were
also a few unregistered individual runners.
While
intended to be a fun, enjoyable run, it was still a race. Broken down into
various categories- overall male, overall female, numerous age groups, relay
teams- winners received trophies and other prizes provided by companies such as
DHL delivery service and Kellogg, Brown and Root who support the military
operations in Iraq. All registered runners will receive something for their
efforts, according to Fink. “Every
finisher gets a medal,” said Fink.
Some ran
for the competition, some for the exercise, and some just for a break from
routine, said Fink. “It shows the spirit of

Adrian Camano of the 253rd Transportation Company said it was a
personal challenge for him to complete the 10 miles. “I just wanted to see if I
could do it,” said Camano. “I was really surprised with myself. It feels really
good.”
Camano
finished in the middle of the pack at one hour and 32 minutes, roughly 33
minutes behind the race winner Maj. Jeff Olive, who finished in 59 minutes and
4 seconds. The top female runner was Chief Warrant Officer 3 Angela Jewett at
one hour and eight minutes and the top relay team was the 130th

Note from
the past…
We
continue to receive regular updates on Ashley. Some are direct from her
and others are through her family. One of the latest updates was an
announcement that she is being awarded the prestigious Presidential
Freedom Scholarship. This is in recognition of her
outstanding leadership in community service. The value of the award is
$500.00.
One
of the requirements for the Presidential Scholarship was a matching funds
stipulation. Ashley was able to use her ARRC scholarship to meet that requirement.
I was very pleased to have had the opportunity this past summer to have worked
with Ashley's high school principle to assist in this effort.
Ashley
is enjoying her experience at
ARRC
should also be proud. She is one of us. We worked hard as a team to
develop and implement our scholarship program. Promoting running (and
walking) as a means to achieve a fitness lifestyle to our youth is a critical
part of our mission. Learning about Ashley's success sends a message back
to us that we need to continue this as one of our key club strategies. Feel
free to send your own congratulations to Ashley and to her family.
