Notes from the President…

The ARRC point’s season has been terrific again, with well over 100 walkers and runners are earning points in one or both series events.  Our kids Fun Run program has set all kinds of attendance records, with average weekly participation being around 60 or so.  Club membership is now close to 200.  Our directors and chairmen are doing a great job.

Many have asked how I’m doing after back surgery.  Because some of you have faced or will face serious injury in the future, perhaps I can relate some information that might be helpful down the road.  Although I still have nerve damage, my doctor has said it’s OK to start back running.  Twice a week, instead of just walking, I run short intervals every 10 minutes.  80-90 seconds puts my heart rate right into the target range and my back feels good.  I’ll work up from there.  No timetable for a mile, or 5 miles, or a half marathon.  Whenever it happens, I’ll take it with a smile.

Listening to my body takes now on a totally different dimension.  Building my core strength is my top priority.  I have to be very conservative to avoid a setback that would cancel out the corrections and the second chance that the surgery has given me.  Much of what I’m doing is based upon a contact with Jeff Galloway who says it might take two years to get back into form.  Runners should be cross training one or two days a week to give certain muscles a rest and strengthen others.

We as a support group are pretty good when someone returns to paths or trails.  However, we tend to forget those that are on the sidelines and away from our view.  This year, club members have faced more than their fair share of injuries.  Being an officer gave me an advantage of regular contact that others do not have.  So, one of my strategies has been to contact some of those who are, or have recently been hurt.  I have learned something from each of them and hopefully have encouraged many of them to seek help.  There are a lot of injuries out there, but folks just don’t have the proper support system to deal effectively with them.  If you hear of someone being hurt or don’t see someone for a while, please think about calling.

When you are injured, immediately ease off and seek qualified help if you think it is serious.  If I had acted earlier, I might not now be facing such a lengthy recovery.  It is far better to face a problem sooner rather than later.

Have a great fall season – and take it easy.

Bob

Notes for the present…

ARRC Scholarship

Long time ARRC student member, Ashley Townsend is the 2003 recipient of a $500 scholarship award.  She is the daughter of Doug and Valerie Townsend of Pendleton.  Ashley joined ARRC before she was even in high school and has run with the club in between track and cross country seasons.  She has just recently graduated from Pendleton Heights High School and will attend Butler University and will major in Pharmacy.

Run the Mounds – November 2, 2003

Mark your calendars for the first Sunday in November.  This year’s event will be another fine race in a series that goes back over 20 years.  We’ve changed the walk to a 5K and added walker age groups in order to attract more participants.  There will be one slight course change to better accommodate a dual finish.  The walkers will start one or two minutes behind the runners and must adhere to race walking conventions to qualify for awards.  We are always in need of volunteers, so please consider getting involved.  You can earn 50 points towards the road series if you qualify.  All volunteers will receive a complimentary sweatshirt.  A map and other information will be available on the ARRC web site, so start checking that sometime in September.

Kids Award Night

Thursday October 2, 2003 will be the annual awards night at Shadyside for the ARRC kids program.  Specific plans will be communicated through ARRCNews.  Please look for the announcement shortly and support our kids.

Fifty States and D.C.

As mentioned in the last PACER, former ARRC member Louie Harshman successfully completed the quest of running a marathon in each of the 50 United Sates and the District of Columbia. Louie was accompanied in his final marathon ran in Anchorage, Alaska, by Terry Spoo, Lonnie Smith and Jim Hoffman.  We have four active ARRC members who are chasing Louie down the same 50 states and D.C. trail.  Follow along each issue as Terry Spoo, Lonnie Smith, Jack Stepp and Tony Martin edge closer to the finish line.

Terry Spoo- 45 states complete as of 23 August 2003

Lonnie Smith- 35 states complete as of 23 August 2003

Jack Stepp- 35 states complete as of 23 August 2003

Tony Martin- 26 states complete as of 23 August 2003

Words of thanks…

 Dear Anderson Road Runners,

Thank you so much for everything over the last four years. The entire club has lavished me with an outpouring of support and friendship. The encouragement, advice, and time this club has given me have definitely helped me become a better runner. I would definitely recommend other student athletes to get involved with the club.

It is awesome that the club has challenged themselves even more so in the last four years, to be involved with area runners. I believe the club is accomplishing this in many ways. Thursday night races have enriched our summer training. Your support at cross country meets has been fantastic. I greatly appreciate the scholarship I received in July, and it will truly help with my education at Butler University. I give a special thank you to the scholarship committee for taking their time to organize this great opportunity for local youth runners. Also, thank you to all of the club members who have supported this scholarship in one way or another. As of right now, I am not running for Butler, but will continue to run.  I anticipate coming back to train and race with friends during breaks and next summer. Thank you very much!

                                                                                                           Your friend in running,

                                                                                                           Ashley Townsend

A big thank you again to Bud Stiffler for providing plenty of cold water during our Thursday night races! Not only does bud set up the cold water, he has seen that we have someone to hand off these cups and cleans up our mess. With the heat index near or over 100 degrees on some of these nights it is welcome point on the course whether you take a drink or douse your head. We do appreciate his time and thoughtfulness!

Ron Wallace…thanks for all your support and encouragement to our Thursday night runners and walkers as they head towards the finish line.  You bring out that extra kick or pull of the arms!

WALKING THE WALK…

Welcome walkers and runners to a new column for the Pacer!  I have been thinking about writing a column about walking for walkers and interested runners.  Finding time for everything I want to do is usually a challenge.  I envision this column as a source of walking information, walking experiences, and information on upcoming races which feature walking age groups.

I began my walking career about three years ago after knee surgery ended my running career.  I ran for nearly fourteen years.  Running was my stress reliever, weight reducer, and competitive energy outlet. Walking is the new outlet for me to get some exercise and still associate with the members of the ARRC.  Walking for me started slowly with shooting for times in the high thirteen minute per mile range. I did not know much bout form or technique.  I now shoot for times in the high ten minute range.  Ron Wallace has tirelessly helped me with suggestions on form and technique.  He is a wealth of knowledge about Race Walking and has been extremely generous in helping anyone interested in walking faster.  Lori Goodson has also helped me in being a great training partner for getting faster and doing those endless training miles together.  I currently train between twenty to thirty miles per week.  I do most of my training at Mounds State Park.   I enjoy the scenery, Hills, NO CARS, and the softer ground (sometimes muddy this year) for my feet.  Pavement beats me down anymore.  The Hill training at Mounds has made my legs much stronger physically.   There is nothing like seeing a couple of deer at Mounds to brighten your day.  In the past two years, I have competed in four half - marathons, the HUFF, Morgan-Monroe 10 miler and numerous 10K and 5K races. Well, enough about me.

In the next article, I plan on discussing the differences between walking and running.  I want to talk about walking form and what is correct walking, not to be confused with jogging or running.  November 02, Mounds will have walking age groups this year.  The Potters Bridge 5K race in Noblesville Nov. 8th will also have walking age groups.  Kris Kringle also has walking awards on Dec. 7th.  Walkers please thank Judy Baylor for taking the time to direct the walking activities when you see her!  I hope to see you out on the trails.  Remember it only takes a little longer to walk it than run it!

 Greg

Congratulations…

Mike Hall and Denise Skillman were married on Friday, 22 August. The couple was married before family, friends and runners at Mounds State Park. Best wishes to you both!
