President’s
message…
Greetings
all! Although I was unable to attend the
Annual Meeting, I was happy to learn all went well in my absence. We have a new slate of officers (more on that
in these pages) and hopefully, a renewed commitment to make this the best year
yet! Although it would be hard to top
the great run (pun intended) lead by immediate past President Bob Hart, I have
a great team to help me meet the goals and objectives of our group – and to
have fun doing it!! There are
brainstorming sessions going on all the time, looking for ways to be more
involved in our community, bringing the group even closer together and getting
more of our members involved. Any ideas
from the membership will be welcome!
As
most of you know, I couldn’t make the meeting due to the death of my
mother-in-law, Lori’s mother, Vergie Anderson.
My family was touched by the goodwill of our group – four ARRC members
even made the trip to the funeral home in
These
recent life-altering events have me reflecting on how lucky we are to belong to
a group whose members have no problem going above and beyond the most basic
definition of friendship. We think
nothing of hitting the road, buying the groceries, running errands, keeping in
touch, listening, providing the benefit of our experience, in short, supporting
our fellow runners in any way we can. I
feel fortunate to be part of such a group and honored you’ve chosen me to lead
you during the next year. And believe
me, your support will be welcome as I take on this challenge.
Happy
trails,
Tommy

Be
on the lookout for the next PACER, brought to you Dr. Ron Harmening, newly
elected editor. Dr. Ron has been
experimenting with a new look (for the PACER) and format. Club members will be
in for a fresh new treat!
In the past year the club
has saved well over $1,200.00 by going online. This is money that can be well
spent on other areas of the club that has long lasting rewards. There are still
some members who do not have internet- access, therefore, we will continue to
print the PACER for those members. During the months when the club meets weekly
the PACER will be available for pick up at the sign in area. If you are a
member who does not always participate in the weekly events then the PACER will
be mailed to you. Please help keep our costs down by listing your e-mail
address on your membership form or by picking up your issue of the PACER.
Share the Pain
Most of you are aware of the ARRC board decision
to strongly encourage an early sign up for points for the 2004 race
season. In accordance, the decision is to only allow the discounted
points fee of $15 (for Thursday nights) to be available to adult members up
until
The purpose of the new policy is to reduce the
bookkeeping and points scoring work load (and confusion) on the race director
and race team. It is always a pain to bring members along after the
season starts and insure accuracy of all the information we need to keep track
of. So, if anyone misses the May 1 deadline they will also share in
the pain by paying the higher fee and having to remember to pay each week to
receive their points.
There will be no IOU's from week to week. Remember, no points fee paid =no points.
This policy is with respect to the Thursday points races, not specifically the Road Series. You are also encouraged to sign up early for the road series as well. Road Series points accumulation starts the next race after we receive the series fee (currently $10). This is in addition to your membership fee. Again, there is quite a bookkeeping effort required here as well.
This policy will be communicated to the ARRC membership many times and in many forms between now and May 1. You can help in two ways. (1) Pay your fees early. (2) Make sure all of your ARRC friends are aware of the new policy and get their dues and fees paid early as well. Please direct your questions to any board member - thanks.

Greetings to everyone in the frozen tundra of the
I would like to thank the Indiana Race Walkers for
allowing several of us to attend their 2004 Judges Clinic for race
walking. Max Walker put on a very
informative presentation on judging. I
gained a lot of knowledge from the clinic.
In judging walkers, you need to be off to the side and view in a
45-degree window from the side. Fast
walkers all look like they are running from in front or from behind. In a competitive walk, no running is allowed
and provides for immediate disqualification.
Any one judge of the race judging team may disqualify for running. Form is judged in a three-step
progression. If you continue the illegal
form for three steps it is judged illegal.
Bent knee and lifting require calls by three judges to disqualify. The leg must be straight at contact of the
heel of the lead foot through vertical with the hip. The judge should view the back of the leg for
the straight convention. Bent knee
provides an unfair advantage over straight leg.
Lifting is not keeping continuous contact with a portion of one foot
with the ground. This may be identified
with head bobbing up and down. Max
showed a tape of International racers in the
I am currently getting ready for the Polar Bear walk
Saturday. I am also trying to get ready
for the Sam Costa on Mar. 21st.
Costa is always a reality check for training. The first 2004 Road Series race is the
Noblesville Kiwanis 15K on April 24th. Let’s get more walkers out this year and
runners. Please watch out during the icy
training. Speed will come with better
weather and a good foundation of miles.
Remember that deer always have the right of way and so do owls.

“I Team” update…
Not the team of choice, but
the team we keep before us and remember in our prayers. This “team” is our
Anderson Road Runner Club members who for one reason or another are on the
injured or recovering from injury or illness. It is a lonely road out there
when you are injured, ill or recovering. During the winter months when we don’t
often see our members are a regular basis, those who can’t run for whatever
reason find the road all the more lonely and cold. If you know of someone who
is not able to run for whatever reason give an officer/board member a call so
they can make our membership aware. Often times and injury will not allow a
member to run, but perhaps another member has “been there” before and can share
some recovery tips, alternate training methods, know of medical staffs familiar
with the injury or will just listen.
On the list currently and
hoping to be up and running soon are:
Dave Flack-severe plantar facitis, currently exercising,
unable to run
Debbie Harry- stress fracture to bone in foot, at press
time bone is healing
Bob Hart- recovering from back surgery and setbacks
during recovery
Peggy
Hart-recovering from surgery to remove brain tumor, at press time she is home
and progressing with help of family and friends,
Jack Stepp-over 16 stitches in knee due to fall on black
ice, at press time Jack is back to full steam ahead after only 10 days off
running,

Siberian Express, or Fun in a Mud Bog……….
January
3rd dawned damp & misty, but it didn’t stop six intrepid ARRC
members from setting off to
The
first sign of trouble hit as we reached Crawfordsville – a shredded belt and an
overheating RV brought our adventure to a halt. Quickly evaluating the situation, and our
chances at being on the start line on time, Jim, Ron and Tommy took off at a
sprint for the car rental establishment spotted in the distance. Securing a 15 passenger van, we transferred
our running gear to the van, and off we went with plans to meet up with Mike at
Kickapoo State Recreation Area, site of the race.
I
won’t tell you how fast we had to drive to get there on time, but we made it to
the racecourse with minutes to spare!
The course would have been slick in any but the driest conditions, but
with all day rain the previous day and a light mist on race day, it was one of
the sloppiest racecourses I’ve ever encountered. Fortunately, it was a mild 50 degrees at the
start, so conditions were messy, but bearable. Everyone in our group managed to stay (mostly)
upright and finished as well as conditions would allow. We discovered four other ARRC members – Perry
& Jeremy Knox, Mark Volk and Andy Preishoff were also in attendance. There were 516 total runners & walkers -
here is how we did overall:
27th Jeremy
Knox 50:17
31st Andy
Prieshoff 50:45
176th Mark
Volk 1:
177th
218th Tommy
Goodson 1:
228th Ron
Harmening 1:

501st
502nd Greg
Smith (walker)
I
frankly don’t know how any of us ran/walked in that stuff, but didn’t we
do well?
The
post race party was one of the best any of us had ever attended. We finally hooked up with Mike Truman (who
missed the race because of further trouble with his motor home) at a downtown
establishment called Mike & Wanda Spanky’s for burgers, brats and
beer. A d.j. provided tunes for dancing
and there were lots of door prizes – Ron won a beer mug full of change by
having the closest guess as to how much was in the jar, winning just over 50
bucks! Really nice t-shirts, sweatshirts
and dri-fit gear were offered for sale at cost and a local running store
offered 20% off gear and shoes brought in for the event. All in all, a well run race, and despite all
the mechanical difficulties, Mike got us home safely. Kennekuk Runners’ next event is in March- The
Mountain Goat Hill Run!
If
you want to join the fun, or just want more information on the Kennekuk
Roadrunners club and their events, take a look at their website at www.kennekuk.com.
