White River Run

A Family Affair

Among the 85 finishers of this year’s race, there were many couples and families.  The father-son team of Jeremy and Perry Knox took 1st and 2nd place overall.  The overall women’s winner, Myranda Harrison, was joined in the race by her mom and two younger sisters.   The half- mile fun run was added to the family atmosphere.

Patricia Hart was the overall female winner in the walk, and Russell Fox the male winner.  Complete results appear on the Shadyside Activity Center bulletin board and on  www.andersonroadrunners.org

Tent in Rest and Recovery Area at Indy Mini a great success!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, the hospitality tent was a Godsend after the heat on the road warriors:  cool drinks, tasty snacks, and  great fellowship in a cool, shady atmosphere.  All of which proves that the dead can come back to life.  Greatly appreciated!  Phil Miller (grateful dead)

We can never thank enough the people who help support our great group of runners/walkers. A big thanks to Elsie Kearns, Evan Achenbach, Patricia Hart and the other "mystery person" who donated deliciously baked goodies for the tent after the Indianapolis Mini Marathon and 5K. Also thanks again to Cyndee Bentley, Hank Gerhart, Carolyn McKinney, Greg Smith and Wally Post for helping set up the tent area and also Don Seal who was on hand to watch over the tent while the runners and walkers did the Mini and 5K. It was great day for all!

Thank you also to Jessica Peterson, Carolyn McKinney, Elsie and Bob Kearns, Ann Morris, Steve Hagensieker, Greg Smith, Judy Baylor and Wray Jean Cornwell for their time and effort to speak on the radio  and help in making  race day registration and  pre registration for the White River Run successful. Again another great day and event for runners/walkers.  – Robin Gerhart

NOTES FROM ARRC PRESIDENT
Summer Greetings,

I hope everyone is enjoying the warmer weather and longer days. It’s great when I get stuck at work late yet know I can still get in a nice run long before it turns dark. And the chances of finding a fellow runner at Shadyside are much greater as well.

Congratulations to our hard-working WRR organization team for another successful race. Frankie St Philips put together a splendid race in a new location, new date and time and a new course in a relatively short period of time. Although there are always a number of people who volunteer, special thanks really need to go to WrayJean Cornwell, Robin Gerhart, and Carolyn McKinney. In addition to Frankie, these three ladies did great work under difficult and somewhat hectic conditions. I’d also like to thank Bob Kearns and Greg Smith for manning the finish line with me, also Bob Hart for his work laying out the course.

I heard many compliments from runners and sponsors alike. And although nothing is for sure, one of this year’s sponsors approached me after the race and inquired as to what it would take to become the primary sponsor of the event. I think that speaks volumes for the presentation the club made to the public.

While we can always improve certain areas, all in all, I think we had a pretty flawless event. Oh and by the way………it looks like we made a nice profit as well. The treasurer is a little behind on his work J

Speaking of money…….your President/Treasurer would really like to have someone take over the treasurer’s duties from me. It’s really not a good idea to only have one person handling the books, especially someone who hasn’t had a nice vacation in a couple of years.  It would be a good time for someone to take on this position. For the moment the job is pretty well caught up and there won’t be a large workload until we get into Run the Mounds. If interested, please contact me or one of the other officers.

Happy running to all, and I look forward to seeing you on the roads.

Steve Hagensieker

ARRC Kicks off 2nd Annual XC Conditioning Program for Area Students

Beginning Monday, June 6th at Mounds State Park, the ARRC will kick off its 2nd year program for "Base Building" area XC Students.  Originally started in 2004, this program was designed to take up the "void" of not having school sponsored area summer training programs.  "The training season was just too short", states Coach Perry Knox.  " Each year I would get involved with area youth at different schools around the beginning of August with the first XC meet in about 3-4 weeks, and that was simply not enough time."  "Many schools in different areas of the state, train all summer and when you meet them for competition, it was obvious."

The XC Conditioning Program emphasizes "base-building" mileage to supplement more specific training the athletes will receive when they sign up for their area school's programs.  The athletes, with help from ARRC member Coaches; Perry Knox, Mark Volk, and Hank Gerhart , will learn basic running drills that involve stretching, bounding, plyometrics, shoes, trail and hill running.  Combined with other activities that will include cookouts, etc., this program will also build camaraderie among area athletes and when they meet in the fall for school competitions will have formed friendships and good citizenship.

The program begins on June 6, 2005 and will run until August 4th with a "mileage award" presentation at that time.  These young harriers

will be making appearances at the Thursday nite Shadyside 1-Lappers as this is their "speed nite" for their workouts.  ARRC members are encouraged to meet and talk with these youth and share running experiences.  One of the purposes of our program is to expose area youth and their families to the ARRC and its involvement in the community.  This program is funded by fees paid by the youth participants, donations and fundraisers organized by the coaches.

"Last year's program began with 16 youth runners and as of the first of this month we have 18 pre-registered", states Perry Knox.  "Our program last year was well received with many of our youth as top performers among their peers at their respective school XC teams".   The ARRC is glad to have such a program that develops area youth and encourages any student to check out the information on our website, or give one of the coaches a call for details.  Program cost is $20. for the 8 week period and will include a custom Running Logbook, Mileage Award, and Entry Fees into the Thursday Nite Races for the duration of the Conditioning Program.  All participants will be required to purchase entry into Mounds State Park either each evening or through the purchase of a Yearly Pass.   Coach Perry Knox 765-640-8142, Coach Mark Volk 765-378-5800 .

(Editor’s note: this program is now off to a successful start, but enrollment is still open.)

Sponsor Spotlight –Art’s Trim Shop

When you visit Art’s Trim Shop, you will likely find ARRC member Jack Stepp hard at work.  Art’s is a family business started by Jack’s father, Art.  Both Art and Jack’s mom still work at the shop.   You may have never seen the shop located at 29 W. Vinyard, just west of Broadway,  but chances are  - you have seen their work.  Their latest projects include:   upholstering booths for Frisch’s, office furniture for St. John’s, custom  Harley Davidson emblems, carpet in an SUV, replacing a top on a Mustang convertible, and door panels, seats, visors on classic cars, along with a lovely floral couch.   You name it – if it is upholstered, they have done it.  Art’s is  a place where craftsmanship and creativity meet.  Thanks to  Art and Jack for their  support of ARRC and indulging my curiosity about the upholstery business.

Show your appreciation – support Art’s & our other sponsors
