President’s Message - January 2001
Another exciting year for ARRC is coming to a
close. Running is again getting the
attention it deserves, both within the club and also in the running community
around us. We’ve seen new opportunities
unfold in front of us and we have an opportunity to continue the excitement
into 2001.
Before reviewing the past year, I would like to
acknowledge the key members of the ARRC volunteer team whose efforts make it
possible to continue our mission and our programs. Tommy Goodson was our vice president and brought a wealth of past
experience and knowledge into our officer group; he was responsible for
resurrecting and redoing the Thursday night record plaque. Also, Tommy’s wife Lori Goodson jumped in
and gave us some important help by supporting our board efforts and our race
committees. Robin Gerhart (editor)
continued her creative ways as one of our key “ideas” people. Robin is always there when we need to
confront a challenge. John Stephenson
was again treasurer - he kept the books, paid the bills on time and produced
the needed reports to satisfy the government.
Jamie Banks was our secretary; she took care of the mail, kept the
minutes and other forms of records for our files. Jamie and John also served on race committees. Jim Hoffman served as an “at large” board member,
brought a wealth of new thinking in the group and was very effective at securing
new sponsorship dollars for our major events.
Steve Hagensieker rounded out our board as an “at large” member; he
provided both experience and support to our Thursday night and White River Run
race committees.
While the above people were your voting members on
the board, we could not have made this throughout the year without our race
directors, their assistants and others.
Nancy King came on board after her rookie year and headed up our
Thursday night program. She, with
assistants Kent Lockhart and Greg Smith executed a “flawless” 20-week race
series. That included good weather
every Thursday and a very impressive real time scoring and standings system
that went from an on-site laptop to our website every week. Also, on Thursday nights, Frank St. Phillips
directed our weekly children’s fun run program. Frank brought fresh excitement and innovation to the kids
run. Greg Smith and Judy Baylor served
as Frank’s helpers. Tony Martin was our
race director for the White River Run and did another fine job. Our road race series was co-directed by
Wally Post and Greg Smith. Wally and
Greg helped take the club name and mission on the road and networked well with
the series race directors. Our
commitment to the road series shows that we believe in the small town race and
that we want those events to continue.
A brand new position within the club is that of webmaster. Tom Corda, with some valuable input from
Steve Hagensieker set up our first website and efficiently updated information
and features during the year. Tom
worked in the background all year, but had a tremendous effect on ARRC’s image
within the running community, and greatly improved our ability to communicate
with the world around us.
Countless others gave us their support by volunteering
for duty for our various race events.
Everyone pulling together made this another great and successful
year.
Most of you obviously know about the running/racing
events, and that always seems to be focus of club activity. But I believe the club is more than just
providing opportunities for racing. Our
mission statement in our by laws states to “promote fitness through
running”. Fitness can and should be
viewed as a life style. Our club
founders believed that when we attempt to relate to other runners, we provide a
support system, not only for them but also, for ourselves. That is why I’m especially proud of our
newest initiative to reach out to the area high school and middle schools and
show those coaches and young runners that we care about them. Although this is still in the early stages,
we had a breakthrough a few weeks ago when we received $2500 in start up money
from Household Finance for a scholarship program. Although it was a part of the Run the Mounds sponsorship, the
board’s plans are to earmark that amount for the scholarship fund. The club has formed a committee to work on
the program and plans a status report at our annual meeting on February 10th. By pacing more emphasis on the youth, we can
promote the idea that running is a fitness lifestyle for a lifetime.
A couple more new initiatives within the club were
(1) our attendance at the county high school cross-country meet in Pendleton
and (2) the first annual reunion night.
As I look towards the next year, the thing that really
impresses me about the group is the growing sense of family. I see it in the way we relate to and support
each other. I see it in the training
groups and / or training partners that have emerged. I see in the accomplishments of those setting personal
goals. From weight loss, getting back
into shape, to completing that first or next marathon, the support system
within the club is fantastic. I see in
the field trips such as going to road series event, going to a cross-country
meet, forming relay teams for the HUFF, or training for the MINI. Whatever you want to call it, it is
contagious and it is good for our sport.
In 2001 I expect we will want to continue that which has worked in the
past, but also, I hope we will be willing to try new things and to adapt to the
challenges of reaching out to the broader running and fitness-minded community.
Annual Anderson Road Runners
Club awards and business meeting will be held Saturday, February 10, 2001, at
Tanglewood. Social hour with snacks and
drinks will begin at 6:00 p.m. Our
guest speaker will talk from 7:00, p.m. to 7:30 p.m. At 7:30 p.m. awards will be distributed with the business meeting
and election of officers following. Cost
is $1.00 per person.
If you are interested in an officer or race director
position please contact one of the current officers. Our club is always in need of willing people to keep moving
forward.
We have had numerous requests from members and
non-members about forming a walking program.
At this no one has been willing to step forward to get the group
organized. If anyone has an interest in
undertaking this task the officers would assist in any way possible to get a
walking program up and walking. A
non-member would also be welcomed to take on this responsibility.
Looking for a way to make these winter days easier to
run? Why not join any one of the
following groups:
Shadyside Recreation
Area- Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 5:00 p.m./5:30 p.m.
Mounds Park Pavilion parking lot- Saturday and Sunday 8:00
a.m./8:30 a.m.
YMCA- Monday through Friday 5:00 a.m.
The second time listed would be for the second
lap. No one runner or group of runners
regulates these groups. These runners
just show up and enjoy the company of whoever has an interest to get a run in
that day and at that time.
As we begin the 2001 year
once again we would like to thank the sponsors below for their of our White River
Run and Run the Mounds races. Without
these folks and our many, many fine volunteers our club could not offer these
two great running events. Please support these folks whenever possible and
offer a personal thank you to them also.

Wally Post and Greg Smith
will once again co-direct the Road Race Series for 2001. The race calendar should be available in the
March/April PACER. If you have any
suggestions or comments with regard to the Road Race Series feel free to
contact either Wally or Greg.
Over the years, club members
have gotten together and traveled to various road races and marathons.
Sometimes just two runners, sometimes a van full of runners, have attacked a
designated event. This year we would
like to get more runners of all levels, running different distances and courses. One of the expeditions will be a trail race
complete with camping for the weekend. If
you would like to be a part of one or more of these outings please contact
Robin Gerhart, Wally Post or Bob Hart.
Ever since I began running there has been Tommy
Goodson somewhere running. Running on the path at Shadyside, running road
races, running dirt bikes, running for surgery to repair a broken collar bone,
running the trails at Mounds Park and running a family, along with his wife
Lori. Running is just natural for Tommy. And as natural and easy is his joy in
sharing this sport with family, friends and cross-country teams. The ARRC is fortunate to have a guy who is
eager to share his enthusiasm, encouragement, and time to make our club and
runners the best they can be. In case you have not had the chance to run

Weight lifters tend to stick with one routine and repeat
the same exercises over and over. However, the body adapts to muscle repetition
resulting in a training standstill or plateau. It is important to vary the
exercises you do and the order in which you do them. A good idea is to have
several good exercises for each muscle
group and rotate them on a regular basis. Also, varying the
types of exercise equipment may be advantageous. Exercise machines generally
isolate the working muscles, and free weights require additional muscle groups
to be used for balance and stability.
Alternating equipment will keep the body changing to accommodate
the new muscle fibers being used, resulting in continued growth of muscle size
and strength.

Bolded races above are in the Anderson Road Runners Club Road Series.
At press time the results for the HUFF were incomplete, however I would like to give a short synopsis of the Huntington Ultra Frigid Fifty. 15 members of the Anderson Road Runners Club made the drive to Huntington reservoir on December 30, 2000, to participate in either the Ultra (50K), Ultra Relay (3 person team, each running a 10.8 mile loop) or the One Loop Run (10.8 miles). Only 1-11/4 miles of this trail run was on pavement, the rest was on snow covered trails.
As nine
of the relay members awaited our first loop runners to come in past the 2-hour
mark, it became increasingly clear we were in for the run of the year. And not the kind of run, one was happy to be
running. When I began questioning my sanity out loud Karen Taylor-Smith told me,
“ not to think in those terms, but to think of this run as character building.” So okay, she has been doing this course
longer than me and has more marathons under her feet than I will ever hope to
run; she must know what she is talking about.
However, never have I seen Bill Baker with a more gremlin-like look on
his face or heard him complain about any run being too difficult, until he came
back to the start/finish line after a 2-mile warm up on the backside of the
course. The signals seemed mixed here
from two accomplished runners, I decided it was time to get my own thoughts
together on this run, so off I went in my layered look of nylon, Gortex and a
big wool blanket that made me appear to be Grizzly Adam’s mate.
After a 2-hour plus wait for my relay partner, Tyler Barker- a great young man and cross country and track runner for Frankton High School, to tag me, I was off on my “character building” run. Not a quarter of a mile into the run, I knew this was the biggest mistake of my running career! The snow was over my ankles and most of the time about calf high. One could compare this course to football training…where you run through the tires stacked two high placed in sand. Not only did every muscle in my body get a work out; my mind was wrung out. One was not able to enjoy the beauty of this snow-laden country, for if you took your eyes off the narrow path you would surely be looking at the snow face to face on your stomach. My ankles turned under me so many times I lost count.
