President’s Message

Another year has passed, one, we will never forget. It seems that almost everyone has re-examined their priorities and runners are no different. We always need to be aware of our surroundings and that applies to when we hit the trails and roads. Now, more than ever the support system within the club becomes paramount as we move forward. In recent years we’ve tried to reemphasize the importance of family and friendships in how the club conducts itself and events. We must continue to develop our "fit" within the community of those seeking fun, fitness and companionship and competition.

During this winter, we would like to continue our field trips and variety runs. Field trips and variety runs make it easier to get outdoors to run and doing things until the Road Series and the Thursday Night runs start up. We’ve already had (1) The Christmas Lights Run – about 12 members, (2) a trip to the HUFF – over 20 ARRC members and friends and (3) the New Year’s run – thanks to Kevin and Debbie Harry – about 10 runners and walkers. Keep checking the newsletter and website, but current thoughts are: a trip to Broadripple for a Monon Trail run and a visit to The Running Company and also a trip to the Cardinal Greenway to meet and run with our friends from Muncie.

So, onward to 2002…. Hope everyone is healthy or getting there. Set some goals. Run with a friend, get a partner or a join with a group, go to races and have a fun year!!

Notes from the past…

Kyle Baker continues making headlines and front cover news with his running career. Former Anderson resident, Highland High School Cross Country and Track star, as well as Anderson Road Runner was voted Michigan Runner of the Year 2001 and also appeared on the front cover of Michigan Runner Magazine. Kyle is the son of Bill Baker, another one of Anderson’s finest runners.

Brock Hagerman finished 14th out of 312 in the USTAF Nationals Held in Nebraska. Brock competed in the 13-14 year old age group. He is 13 years old. Way to go Brock!

Notes for the present…

ARRC Annual Meeting – February 7, 2002 at 6:00 PM – Millcreek at Chesterfield

Our annual meeting will be a time of celebration. Our members have accomplished much through their running or walking. Many will receive specific awards and recognition. All of us should be excited to share in everyone’s success, because one person’s success becomes motivation for others. We can accomplish much more as a group than as individuals. Please plan on attending this event; it will be fun.

We have rented the Memorial Hall at Millcreek Civic Center in Chesterfield (old Chesterfield School). Use the Northeast entrance. Bring a dish for a pitch in and your own drinks and table service. The club will provide chicken. If anyone is coming directly from a run, showers are available.

The meeting is also a time to discuss club business. The Board will bring forth some by-laws change proposals, including to formally integrating our walking program director into our club structure. Other changes also may be discussed or recommended.

We want to continue to balance the workload, by encouraging as many people as possible to be involved in club activities – this helps everyone. Two race director positions are immediately open. They are: Thursday Night Director and White River Run Director. There is a proposal on the table to move the White River Run entirely to the city park trails. This will greatly simplify the work needed to plan and direct the race.

Some of the currently elected board members may wish not to run again. Except for treasurer, none of these positions requires as much time as before club restructuring three years ago. Meetings usually last about 90 minutes and there are about 10 meetings per year (not twelve). Being an elected board member means having a direct say in how we do things throughout the year, and it can be a very gratifying experience. Please think about it, give Bob or one of the other officers a call if you have any concerns or questions. Each of us needs to consider how we can best help the club.

Winter training runs:

During the winter ARRC members and friends still meet frequently for fun runs and training runs. This is a good way to stay in touch, stay motivated and get in some miles during these cold months. Times & places you can count on finding runners (& walkers).

Shadyside Activities Center
Tuesday and Thursday evenings – 5:00 & 5:30 PM
Mounds State Park (pavilion lot)
Saturday mornings – 8:00 & 8:30 AM
Sunday mornings – 8:00 AM
McKinley Middle School in Muncie
Track workouts – 5:30 PM on Wednesdays. (later moves to 6:00 PM)
Ball Hospital Wellness Center
"Mini" training – 8:00 AM Saturday mornings

Most of the time there are enough people to break into groups of several different paces and you’ll almost always have someone to run with.

Notes for the future…

Blow-Dry Your Feet

Blow-drying your feet may sound funny, but it is one way to help reduce the chance of developing athlete's foot. A fungus that grows in warm, moist environments causes athlete's foot. Blow-drying keeps your feet dry, reducing the chance that the fungus that causes athlete's foot will grow. Of course, never use a blow dryer when you are near water.
