January-February 2003 |
Race Directors:
Fun Run Director: Frank St. Phillips
Walking Director: Judy Baylor 643-7637
Hello everyone! I hope the holidays were good and that each of you is getting off to a good start this New Year. This report will focus on explaining the annual meeting, which is schedule for Thursday evening – February 6th.
As
a not for profit corporation, we are required by law to have an annual meeting
of the membership, elect officers and conduct business that might be necessary
to continue our mission and objectives as a group. Even though we will have a business meeting
that night, the main focus will be an evening of fellowship and
celebration. Some of us have not seen
each other for several weeks and it will be great to be back together.
The
membership count is right at 190 and that's the highest in almost a decade, and
that means we will have a lot of award winners.
Age group awards will be presented for our two series events. All in all, about 80 people total will
receive single or multiple awards – now that's exciting!
So,
after the dinner portion of the meeting we will have the business meeting, the
awards and election. We will briefly
review the past year, learn about the financial status of the club and also
look to the future. There will be some
proposals relative to our bylaws and event rules that we live by. Bylaws changes can only be approved at a
membership meeting. Please check our
website andersonroadrunners.org beginning two weeks prior to the meeting for
more information. If a password is required, use “arrcrules”. If you have specific questions or different
ideas, please call a board member/officer to discuss.
We
want you to be involved in your club.
The club is growing again and many new members have joined, particularly
in the last two years. The club operates
best and reaches out better to the running community when
everyone helps.
Although many board members may wish to run again for election, there
probably will be some great opportunities for new blood. We also need race directors and helpers of all
kinds, sizes and shapes. You may want to
think how you can help of become involved as an officer or race director, or
assistant, or just a helper. The more
each of us help, the easier it is on everyone and the
better for the club in the long run. It
also is fun. Feel free to call a board
member on how YOU can help ARRC.
See
everybody on February 6th – see separate article for time and details.

Proposed by-law changes will be posted on the
ARRC website in January. Please review these proposed changes prior to the
annual meeting, as the membership will be asked to vote on these proposed
changes/amendments. Also, if you or any member you know would like to
participate as a club officer please contact one of the current officers. Fresh
ideas and people always seem to help our club expand in new ways and
directions! Further information will be available the next PACER and also on

Due to a worsening financial picture within the RRCA, the RRCA has decided to
suspend their newsletter, Footnotes. You will no longer receive this
publication from the RRCA. This is an excerpt from an e-mail received from the
RRCA Executive Director on this topic: “ …beginning
with the Winter 2002 edition we suspend the production of Footnotes until such
an alternative plan can be discussed and finalized. In the meantime, an online
version of the winter issue will be posted on the RRCA website.”

feel better afterwards.
According to Bud Stiffler, Patricia was the first
woman from the Anderson Road Runners Club to run an ultra (50K) marathon.
According to his archives, based in Dallas, Texas, at the time Patricia Hart
ran her ultra she was ranked 30th in the United States. These days you won’t find Patricia running
the paths and trails, but if you are lucky you just might catch a glimpse of
her race walking! She is every bit the walker that she was the runner.

The following is an e-mail that I received recently from
Bob Kearns who just so happens to be training south of the snow and extreme
cool air we here in Indiana are dealing with this winter. It is always good to
here from our members who have the good fortune to travel outside our immediate
area and run in a new environment.

Speaking of cold, for those of you
who didn’t go to The HUFF this year, once again FRIGID held true. The Anderson Road Runners Club was well
represented with one-loop participants and a relay team. Those folks were:
Wally and Linda Post, Tommy and Lori Goodson, Mike and Paige Truman, Greg
Smith, Jim Hoffman, Denise Skillman. Ron Harmening, Debbie
Harry and Wray Jean Cornwell.
Going the distance, 50K, were Bud Stiffler and
Alicia McElroy. Both runners finished second in their respective age group.
This was Alicia’s first ultra and Bud’s third at the HUFF. Below is a recap of
Alicia’s race at The HUFF, submitted by Bud Stiffler-
Be sure to congratulate Alicia McElroy on her first
ultra. Here’s a lady who does less training miles than I do to run long events
and produces better results. The longest
training run Alicia had was less than a week before The HUFF, on the HUFF
course with myself and her beautiful mixed lab, Vada.
The three of us enjoyed a dry, clear trail and a very quiet, gentle run. With snow covering the same trail on December
28, and hordes of runners, Alicia worked her way through the pack and never
looked back. She is the first female Anderson Road Runner to complete The HUFF
50 K Trail Run. Alicia completed the course in 6:
