Some developments within the club…..On June 27th,
ARRC presented its first scholarship award ($500) to Frankton graduate, Scott
Morgan. Scott was an outstanding
selection and undoubtedly will be successful in his pursuits in higher
learning. He will be attending
My
day after summary:
I felt like the race was a wonderful success. As my first attempt at being a race director it went much better than I had anticipated. I feel the key was having the right people for the responsibilities necessary.
Bob
Kearns was phenomenal in his efforts of measuring the course with the
assistance of Kent Lockhart.
Peggy
Hart asked some much needed questions about sign ups that weren't even
discussed and did an outstanding job at race day registration.
Greg
Smith put his whole heart into this race, not only scoring but also finish line
chute setup and take down. He recruited
Fred Matthew Jr., at
with directional locations.
Elsie
Kearns took charge of balloon filling with Karen Taylor-Smith. Elsie completed
her support by working as the finish line tag stringer. She did an absolutely wonderful job,
especially not knowing what a stringer was 30 minutes before the race.
Chuck
Bagley & Dana Green also stepped up and filled very critical roles by
pulling tags and keeping people in order at the finish. Special thanks to Brian
Forster and Wendell Parsons for filling in as last minute timers?
Mark
Eddy, also from the YMCA, came through with food and water which are very
critical in any event. I appreciate him
assisting me in the decision to call the ambulance regarding some help for a
runner. He even, as a last minute
effort, took a timer position at the 3 mile mark. Bob Hart did a lot of leg
work writing sponsor requests for donations a following up with them. He did a lot of PR work and organization that
I will never even know since it comes so natural to him. Thank you, Bob, for your direction to me,
such a novice in the race director role.
I
would especially like to thank Lori most of all for helping pick the awards,
shirts, scoring, signs and correspondence with all involved. I wouldn't be able to mention all that she
has put forth.
Special
thanks to Rod McKenzie not only for leading the runners on his bike, but also
for helping set up balloons at the signs and water tables. Thank you to Jerry
lacy for manning the critical turn around point. He also recruited his daughter Ashley and
some of her friends to help at the water stops. Mike Porter,
Charles Schwabb and Judy Baylor for being directional
guides at critical spots. Also Charlie Schwabb for taking the time
to bring and set up his kites for an added bit of pizzazz.
There
are so many more people that volunteered either on race day as fill ins or pre determined that I know I am missing naming them,
but their efforts and support are appreciated so much? My summary, due to all of these supporting
people either mentioned or not mentioned by name, is that the White River Trail
Run 2002 was an outstanding success. My special thanks to everyone for their
efforts. They were all appreciated and
all efforts were significant!
Thank
You One & All!

Trip/June 8, 2002
One
beautiful Saturday morning, instead of heading out to Mounds or Shadyside to
put in their long run, a group of ARRC members buckled up and headed to
Broadripple, location of The Running Company, a store that caters to runners
and walkers, selling shoes, gear, literature as well as providing a place for
local runners to meet for training/practice runs. The reason?
This group of runners were about to learn more about something we don't often
think about until too late - injury prevention.
The
presenter was Ralph Reiff , Program Director for
Ralph
Reiff visits the store at least once a week in order
to be on hand to talk to runners who have questions; he works closely with
local schools, club and pro sports teams and is a great reasource
for those who may need help recovering from an injury. You can learn more about
Training Talk…
“If you run or race early in the morning, you won’t have time to eat a substantial breakfast, but it’s a good idea to get some basic carbohydrates into your stomach. Try a piece of toast, a bagel, an energy bar, or a banana. A small cup of sports drink will help you get through a short run. If you’re running longer, try to drink more, for both the water content and the carbohydrates.”

Burfoot’s Principles of Running
Resist the urge to lean forward as you run—-it shortens your stride, hampers breathing and may increase your risk of injury. Every mile or so, monitor your posture and make sure your head, torso and pelvis are aligned.
