ANDERSON ROAD RUNNERS CLUB |
|
JULY-AUGUST 2000 |
Race Directors:
ARRC Road Series: Wally Post 649-8674
Fun Run Director: Frank St. Phillips
Reunion Night
Mark August 10th on your calendars, as
Reunion Night. We want to unite as many
past and present members as possible and generate excitement for the club and
the local running scene.
This will be one of our regular Thursday Night
Points Races, but a special chance to invite past members to see what we are
about in 2000. As a part of the
celebration, the Thursday night (one lap) record plaque is being updated and will
have a new look - and spots for new age groups. Many of our past champions are still in the area and we want to
encourage them to come out and see what’s happening.
Anyone who’s ever been in the club or who has ever
been interested in running is invited out to the Shadyside Beach Area (now
called Shadyside Activities Center) between 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on August
10th. In addition to the new
one lap record plaque, there will be some special presentations and awards.
Please invite everyone you know. If some are not
running, we’ll start a walking division.
Also, look for information about reunion night on our website and in the
newspaper.
White River Run Review (by Bob Hart)
Our June 10th White River Run was
successful. A new course - mostly on
the city trail system - took us along several miles of the White River and
through the Shadyside Lake complex. As
the 3rd event in the 2000 ARRC Road Series, several club members
found it to be a hot and sticky day while earning their points. It appears the club finished in the black
and proceeds from this race will be placed in a special fund that will be used
to support local high school runners and programs. More details later. Very
special thanks to our volunteers, who made it possible to conduct the
event. In addition to the people you
saw on race day, I would like to publicly thank those you worked quietly behind
the scenes with the planning and preparation.
Steve Hagensieker, Jim Hoffman, Tommy and Lori Goodson, Robin Gerhart, John
Stephenson, Jamie Banks, Terry Spoo, Greg Smith, Tim Swain and most of all our
race director - Tony Martin. It was a
great effort.
Other partners in the event were: Anderson City
Police, Anderson Park Department, Anderson Family YMCA and the Madison County
Emergency Management Group - Communications Division.
Finally - thanks to our great line up financial
backers:

Tommy
Goodson has stepped forward and
been appointed as our 2000 Vice President.
Tommy has been busy updating our current club race record holders. Please take time to visit our website or
review the current plaque that is on display each Thursday evening during the
point race. If you can provide updated
information to any of these age divisions please get in touch with Tommy. A
very limited supply of ARRC clothing is still available for sale. A new order is being prepared for shorts and
singlets, if you are interested in ordering any new clothing please contact
Tommy as soon as possible.
The youth are our future. Frank St. Phillips is
helping the running future as the 2000 Fun Run director. Frank, along with Greg Smith, Judy Baylor
and several other ARRC members have been getting the children off and running
each Thursday night for the one mile Fun Run.
Please take time to give these young aspiring runners a big hand of
applause and cheer them in as they finish their run each week. Better yet, if you have finished your warm
up or just want to warm up a mile, run among these youngsters and encourage
them with their task. Anyone wanting to donate awards, goodies or drinks for
these hard working kids please see Frank St. Phillips.
Rehydration Man is out and on the course
again! Our own Bud Stiffler has been out on the running path with much desired
cold water on those hot, humid nights. Thank you Bud, for the cold one!
Attention Athletic Directors and Cross Country
Coaches…The Thursday Night Points Races offer a great opportunity for your
Cross Country Teams to run with some of the best talent in central
Indiana. The Anderson Road Runners Club
is open to all runners of all ages and all levels. Your athletes will get a top-notch speed workout running with our
runners. Club members pay a fee to
participate in the Thursday Night Points Races, if any of your athletes want to
participate and are not paying for points please advise them to observe the
right of way to club members at the start of the race and at the finish. Our points participants cross the finish
line and are handed sticks with their finish number please do not take a stick unless you have paid the entry fee.
Again, you and your teams are more than welcome
to join us each Thursday night.
Running manners…they need to be exercised during
our Thursday Night Point Races. The
ARRC members do not have exclusive rights to the running path during our
race. Sometimes runners get caught up
in the moment, and in their zone, not aware of the other persons enjoying the
park. As the summer continues the park
is going to get increasingly busier, let’s all remember to give others the same
amount of space as we use.
Remember
our website address
www.andersonroadrunners.org. You can access the Thursday Night Points
Race standings, view the race calendar and get race results. Tom Corda is our webmaster and is doing a
fine job of keeping our website up to date.
It
will not be long until the Run the Mounds race, November 05, 2000. Race director, Bob Hart, is already
beginning work on this great trail run.
If there is any member who would like to be a sponsor or contributor for
this event please contact Jim Hoffman, Bob Hart or any officer. Levels of participation are as follows:
Major sponsor- $500.00 and above
Sponsor- $200.00 - $499.00
Contributor- $50.00 - $199.00
The location for the Annual Meeting has not yet been determined, as the Mounds Park pavilion is not available during the months of January, February and March. Anyone with a suggestion of locations for our membership to gather for food and fun please contact Bob Hart.
