With the Indy Mini behind us, and the warm weather
running season in full swing, the Anderson Road Runners have much to be pleased
about. Our club is vibrant and
growing. I want to welcome the many new
members who have joined us this year.
Not only do our new faces include runners, but walkers and children as
well. We have a great family
atmosphere. This is very apparent on
Thursday evenings at Shadyside and also at the week- end road series
events. With the cheering for others,
the new friendships, the pizza gatherings, our support system is working.
We are in the process of closing the books on this
year’s White River Run. The run was
successful. The runners welcomed returning to the 15K course. Even though we had hoped for higher numbers,
the 150 runners between the ARRC White River Run and the YMCA - The World’s
Largest Run was pretty good considering the time of year. We were most thankful the skies cleared in
time for the race. The cooperative
effort with the YMCA worked well for us, and the experience is forging a new
partnership within the community, which will benefit us all. Depending on board action, we hope to use
the proceeds to add a sizeable amount to our scholarship fund, which is
currently about $2700.00. Stay tuned
for updates on the scholarship program.
Some of you may not be acquainted with our website. The URL address is
www.andersonroadrunners.org. The
website contains much information about our club including the Thursday night
results and standings. Check it
out. Our Webmaster is Tom Corda. We are
open to ideas for enhancing the site to assist our members and other runners
with information about local running / walking activities. Let us know what you think.
Mark your calendars for the second annual ARRC
Reunion Night, Thursday, August 09, 2001, at Shadyside. We are inviting as many people as possible
to rediscover what the Anderson Road Runners are doing and what we are
about. It will be a time of reunion and
celebration.
Have a great summer!!
The saying that goes, “save
the best for last” is just what Wally Post did in presenting the 2000
Director’s Award to our own Bud Stiffler at one of the our
Thursday night Point Races. Each year
Wally selects a club member who has gone beyond the call of running to
encourage, assist, and provide the new or not so new runners in our area and
beyond with a means of personal satisfaction in there running. Bud is unselfish in his time to help a new
runner gain confidence and stamina, provide help and answers for a running
injury, listen to your latest race accomplishment, set up “his own water stop”
for the Thursday night runners, writing articles to the local paper recognizing
area runners, travel to out of town races and brag on the ARRC members, support
other running clubs with his attendance and knowledge, all the while never
telling you how many marathons, ultra-marathons, 24-hour runs and 100 mile
races he has run in addition to the hundreds of lesser distance races he
has participated in during his running career. Our club is most fortunate to
have a runner the caliber of Bud Stiffler in our midst!
Our condolences go to the
family and friends of Joyce Hockensmith, who passed away on June 03, 2001. Joyce was a member of the Fort Wayne Track
Club and the guest speaker for the 1999 ARRC Annual Christmas Party and Meeting. During her running career, Joyce ran 173
marathons, a minimum of two in each state in the United States and travel
abroad to compete as well
Notes for the present…
As Bob mentioned in his message, our attendance is growing. One only has to arrive early on Thursday
evenings to notice the increase in our Children’s Fun Run. Participation is up by approximately 50
percent over last season. Please take a
moment from your pre-race routine and come cheer these young runners across the
finish line. You will be amazed at the
times some of these children are turning in.
Better yet, why not try a one-mile warm-up with some of them. I think you will find a few of these runners’
pace to be more than you want for a warm up!
WELCOME to the following new members:

A big round of applause and thank you to the following persons for
sponsoring a race during the Thursday night one lap series: Greg Smith, Ron Rabenstein, Tom Corda, Perry
Knox, and Trent Sinnett. These folks
have given a little more incentive for the runners each week to compete. If you would like to sponsor a race please
see Doug Townsend, race director, to select your date.
High school / middle school
runners welcome at ARRC Thursday night runs-
Many
of the local high school / middle school runners stay in shape over the summer
by running with the club on Thursday evenings at Shadyside (2.6 miles). We have about 100 runners per week from June into August.
Gun
time is 6:00 PM sharp. It is not
necessary to join the club, but some do and earn points during our shortened
"student season". You can
also pay $1 per race and qualify for our weekly ribbons program and weekly
sponsor awards. High school runners who
rub elbows with the club may gain insight about our exciting new scholarship
program that will be formally announced in the near future. See the ARRC website for more information
about the club, or contact any officer.

advice you ever received- “hang in there”
What advice would you
share with a new runner/walker- Try to be prepared for the race. I was not prepared for my first Indy Mini.
It was cold and rainy. On the way to the car after the race there was cable
across the road. I didn’t know if I should step over it or lie on the ground
and roll under it. I really, really, really hurt.
Judy is another club member who gives to other runners and walkers as much as she gives to her own running and walking. This year’s walking program has been developed and directed in large part from Judy’s initiative. Prior to getting the walking program started, Judy directed the Children’s Fun Run. On many a Thursday evenings you will find Judy going between the Fun Run, walking and tabulating results for the walkers. Another stellar member of our club!
Buzzards' Roost 10K
By Kevin Harry
I felt like I was in the " Twilight
Zone".. How could this be? The 22nd running of the Buzzards' Roost
and no tornados, thunderstorms, damaging hail, or dangerous lightening in the
forecast. I thought I must be in the
wrong place at the wrong time, but for once the weather for Evan Achenbach’s
premier race was absolutely perfect. Not a cloud in the sky, not too hot,
not too humid, just right. Karma had finally caught up to Evan and today
was his day.
The one thing you notice about running the Buzzards' Roost is that almost everyone
shows up early. That could be because of race anxiety, but I believe, it is
because the race itself is like a reunion. For 22 years it has
been the one staple you could count on and look forward to, knowing others you
may not have seen in a year will be there to run. There is something to be said
for the reliability of a race, and I know of few other races as
reliable as this. The race itself must also be inspirational, because I know of
at least one person who hadn't ran a road race in years to get caught up in the
moment and sign up at the last minute. Things like that happen at the
Buzzards' Roost! In the corporate world they speak of having a benchmark, which
means having a standard to go by or copy. In my opinion, the Buzzards' Roost is
the benchmark of road racing. Thanks to Evan
Achenbach with
his knowledge and experience. We can
only hope this event is one tradition that
will continue for as long as there are runners who want to run. Now I
could go on, and talk about good traffic control, timely water stops, timers,
post race treats, and the like, but those of you who were there already know
about this, and those of you who were not, can come next year and experience it
for yourself...
Apple Butter
This recipe can also be made
in a crock pot.
Makes 4 cups
10 Apples, large, peeled and
cored
1 1/2 cups Sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons Cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon Clove, ground
1/2 teaspoon Salt
Cut the apples into medium
slices. Place in a heavy saucepan. Stir in the remaining ingredients. Cook for
three
hours (or until thick and
dark) over very low heat, stirring frequently. Refrigerate. Serve on warm
biscuits.
When love and skill work together, expect
a masterpiece.
