President’s
Message
Spring is right around the corner; so hope everyone
is energized to wake up from his or her winter’s nap. Or, maybe you’ve been training all along. A core group of ARRC regulars have been on
the trail system all winter long. And we’ve been keeping each other going. It’s great to know that when you leave work
and head for the trail, someone else will almost always be there. Now that we have the new building, there is
a place to change and retreat inside for pitstops if needed. We were very pleased with the Park
Department for keeping the running path clear and the restrooms available
during our runs.
Every once in a while, we all need to think and act
upon our common sense when it comes to running safely. It’s easy to let down your guard and forget
that there are hazards on the trail, just as there might be on the road that affects
our safety. As many of you come back
out to Shadyside, keep your guard up and think about staying safe.
Some suggestions…
1.
Stay
alert when driving in / out of the parking lots for other vehicles or
pedestrians.
2. Park at the new Activities Center (old beach area). That’s where the “regulars” are.
3. Run with a friend - especially women, and especially in the more remote trail areas.
4. Never leave valuables in your vehicle.
5. Be both conscious of and courteous to other trail uses. Try to pass on the left, or call out your intentions, a startled walker may veer right into your path.
6. If you see or suspect criminal or suspicious activity, call the police at 648-6700 or if an emergency use 911. There is a pay phone on the north side of the new building.
Since I’ve mentioned the new building, best to say
some more words about it. There are
public restrooms open almost all of the time.
The building is very nice and heated.
The Park Department has informed us of the scheduled “open” hours for
the restrooms. It will be unlocked
between 7:00 and 7:30 a.m. each morning.
After April 1st, the lock up time will be 10:00 p.m. - until
then it’s 7:00 p.m. As the spring and
summer progress there will be volleyball leagues forming and playing.
2000 will be another great year for ARRC. We have a great group of people and new
runners joining all the time. Watch for
our upcoming events, like the Thursday Night Races, the Road Series, White
River Run and Run the Mounds. If you
have ideas, questions or want to help please let us know. We will be meeting, on Thursdays, back at
the (old) beach area. Also, we have two
key openings of our officer group that we need to fill quickly, in order to
move full speed into the running season.
We need a Fun Run Director for the children’s program - this is very
important to the future of running - and also, we do not yet have a Vice President. If you think you can help even in a small
way, please step forward. Most of the
ground work for either position is already done.
Have a great year - stay fit, stay alert and be
happy.
See you on the trail…
Bob

Tony Martin, has indicated that this year’s race distances will be 12K and

make the event a success for the runners.
If you and /or a family member(s) are interested in volunteering, please
contact Tony Martin at 649-7565 or Bob Hart at 643-6304.
