President’s Message
Greetings!  Our annual meeting on February 7th was filled with good food and great awards for accomplishments.  Congratulations to all.  I want to thank each of our officers, board members, race directors and volunteers for a great job in 2001.  It was a good year for the club.  We grew with several new members and had fun.

Many people have been able to train this winter – thanks to the mild weather.  Runners with injuries last year seemed to have recovered and are out on the trails and roads again.  I sincerely hope that each of you will all have an injury free year.  It is training time for the Mini, although some will stick to shorter distances, which is fine.  If you are training for the Mini, remember that we are trying to be your support system.  ARRC runners are always available at Shadyside during the week (usually Tuesday and Thursday) around 5:00 to 5:30 and at Mounds on the weekends (8:00 to 8:30).  I encourage you to link up with the training groups; call any of the officers if you have questions.

Speaking of the Mini, we plan to have our ARRC hospitality tent again at the R&R area in Military Park.  It will be a place to leave your gear, meet afterwards for refreshments and just hang out.  We had a great time last year and this year should be even better.   Watch our club web site at www.andersonroadrunners.org for details.

Again, ARRC will have the road series.  Check the web site for calendar and information.  The first event is the Noblesville Sunrisers 15K – April 20.  Wally Post and Greg Smith will again coordinate this series; they do a great job.  These weekend events take us across the east-central part of the state to see grass roots running at its best.  Sign up for the series and do as many events as you can.  Also, there are some rules changes that give additional incentives for volunteering.

Although most of our officer board and race director positions are filled for this year, we still do not have a director for our most important activity, which is the Thursday one lappers.  Pre-season starts April 4th at 6:00 PM.  We want to keep the points series alive.  It’s been an ARRC mainstay since 1979.   We need all members to help with finding a director or an acceptable solution.  Feel free to contact any board members with ideas.

See you on the trails (or perhaps the roads) - Bob

Notes from the past…

This year’s annual meeting was held on 07 February at the Millcreek Civic Center in Chesterfield. Attendance was good and the food abundant and delicious. Officers for the 2002 year were elected and are as follows:

President-Bob Hart, Vice President-Tommy Goodson, Treasurer- Peggy Hart, Secretary- Lori Goodson, Editor-Robin Gerhart, At-Large officers- Daneen Colligan and Jim Hoffman, Membership Director- Doug Townsend and Special Events Director- Judy Baylor.

Please feel free to contact any of these officers with questions or comments. Your club is only as strong as its membership and the officers are always open to new ideas and suggestions.

Top age group winners in last year’s Thursday Night 1-Lap Race were awarded handsomely designed running bags, while the Road Series winners received Cool-Max shirts.

Perfect attendance at the Thursday Night 1-Lap Race went to: Perry Knox, Jack Stepp, Kevin Harry, Evan Achenbach, Gene Chandler, Benny Westmoreland and Tim Swain. Patricia Hart was awarded perfect attendance for her 15th year in a row! Way to go runners.

Special awards were presented to the following: James West Award- Ashley Townsend, Rookie of the Year- Female, Kathy Werhley and Male, Craig Green, Most Improved Runner- Female, Dana Kinley and Male, Brian Forester. The Jeff Bailey Memorial Award was given to Judy Baylor.

" What a proud moment when I was chosen to receive the Jeff Bailey Memorial award at our banquet.  I appreciate this more than I can express."

"  I never had the opportunity to meet Mr. Bailey but I know a lot of runners who miss him and the times they ran together.  He is to this day an inspiration to all runners.  It is an honor and privilege to receive this award.  Thank You!"

      Judy Baylor

Notes for the present…

Wanted- Race Director

Thursday Night 1-Lap Races have been a rich tradition to our club since 1979.This event allows runners/walkers the chance to compete against other club members, hone their running/walking skills, develop new friendships and enjoy the sport of running/walking with a group. Competing and placing in the top three of your age group has offered some nice running attire and gear over the years as well. Next to the club president, the race director of this event is probably the hardest working and most visible job in the club. To date the position of race director is still unfilled. We are in need of one or more persons to step forward to help continue this core activity. No previous experience is necessary. Training and support will be given by club officers and former directors to anyone willing to step forward. Pre-season starts on 04 April 2002, with the points beginning 09 May. Please give this position your serious thought and concern in order that ARRC can again offer this great program. Contact Bob Hart at 643-6304 / rrhrunner@att.net or Tommy Goodson at 6424834 / RKastle@aol.com

Points Walk

We are preparing for our Thursday night points walk.  We have a committee consisting of Greg Smith, Patricia Hart, Barb Hamilton, Valarie Goodwin and Debbie King.  Thank you for volunteering your time.  This committee will meet to make suggestions to the board on ways to improve the walk and make it more exciting for the Walkers.

We need more Walkers!  Talk it up at work and with your friends.  You get them here and we will hook them!!!

2002 Road Series Running

Fifteen races will comprise this year’s Road Series. The race dates are listed in upcoming races in bold print. In addition to being a club member the participant must also join the Road Series. Participants must complete a minimum of six races. New for this year, is a mandatory volunteer position to be made by the participant at one of the listed races. This volunteer position will count in your minimum. However, you cannot accumulate points for both volunteering and running the same event. Completion of the Indy Mini Marathon will result in 50 points being awarded the participant regardless of finish. Any race director entered in the Road Series who has a race on the series calendar will receive 50 points.

2002 Road Series Walking

For the Road Series walking we are looking to start with a Women’s and a Men’s bracket. If enough interest is generated a ten year age group bracket will be established. In races with walking categories the participants will walk the distance designated. In races without walks, the walkers will walk the race distance. Further rules and clarifications will be made before the season starts. Please log on the ARRC website for updates.

Again this year Frank St. Phillips will direct the Children’s Fin Run on Thursday evenings. In order to score the points for the children before the start of the adult race this year’s start time has been moved up to 5:15 p.m. Anyone wishing to help Frank with this event please contact Bob Hart or Robin Gerhart. The future on running is founded in our young runners.

Last issue of The PACER newsletter, if you do not renew your membership by 15 April 2002. Anyone who does not renew his or her membership by 15 April 2002 will not receive the May-June issue by mail.
