President’s Message

Hello everyone.  By the time you receive this newsletter the Mini will be history.  I hope everyone did well and was able to visit the ARRC hospitality tent.

The road series started with the Noblesville 15K.  Kyle Baker was the overall winner and over 25 ARRC members participated.  Now, the Thursday night series is about to begin and of course excitement is building.  New people are again joining the club.  If you see a new face, please say hello and welcome then into our group and make the feel at home.  Each of us can remember when we started running with the group and how much it meant to have someone come up, shake our hand and talk to us.  Each person is significant.

Bob Kearns is our new race director for the Thursday night one lapper.  Give Bob your support and if possible, your help.  We have gone with a committee approach this year.  Those on the committee will each “give up” a number of races during the 20 week season.  In turn, they will earn 50 points for volunteering.  See Bob for details, or ask if he needs additional volunteers.

Frank St. Phillips will again direct our kids program.  We are trying to reach out to more and more kids each year to build the program.  This is another key area where we could use more help.  There are opportunities for volunteering or financial help.  The kids have always run free of charge, but we ask for a youth membership application to be completed by each family.

Continue to check the website for club happenings and news.  Things of interest at this point in time include our scholarship program and our upcoming injury prevention clinic at The Running Company on June 8th.  And, of course, the White River Trail Run is June 1st.  Be sure to visit the web site often.

Have a great summer and stay injury free.

See you on the trails, Bob

Treasurer’s Alert…

Ribbons have been purchased, at a cost of  $725.90, for the Thursday night races.  These ribbons are for placing and personal best, hopefully we will have enough of a supply to last the 2002 season.  The last ribbon purchases, in 1998, totaled $240.00.

Notes from the past…

Boston Marathon 2002

The following Anderson Road Runners qualified and participated in this year’s famed Boston Marathon:

Brian Forester- a 1992 graduate of Mid View High School in Cleveland, Ohio and a 1996 graduate of Anderson University. Brian is employed with the Anderson Herald Bulletin.  Running for only two years, Brian has participated in two marathons prior to the Boston Marathon. His qualifying time for Boston was done in a marathon held in Scranton, PA in October 2001. Brian is 27 years old and I would consider him the “rookie of the very fine trio” that went to Boston.

Mike Hall- a 1977 graduate of We-Del High School in Muncie, IN. Mike is employed with B and B Tool and Die Company Inc.  At age 42, Mike has been running for 16 years, and is “the veteran marathoner” of this group having completed 15 previous marathons. Mike also ran his qualifying time for Boston last October in Scranton, PA.

Mike Shelton- a 1974 graduate of Anderson Highland High School and currently employed with St. John’s Medical Center in Anderson. At 47 years of age, Mike has been running for 24 years. He ran in four marathons prior to the 2002 Boston Marathon, one of which was the 1981 Boston Marathon.  Mike’s qualifying time for Boston this year was done in Columbus, OH  last November.

On Patriot’s Day, April 15, 2002, the Anderson trio not only represented Anderson and the state of Indiana, but themselves as well. They ran in the shadows of great runners from the past…and made shadows of their own.

We’re proud of you gentlemen!!!

                                                            - Bud Stiffler

Notes for the present…

May 16th, 2002, the Children’s Fun Run will be sponsored by AARP and the Anderson Road Runners.  The theme for the 5:15 p.m. run is Grandparent’s Night. Prizes will be given to the top three winners in both the boys and girls divisions.  Grandparents are encouraged to run/walk with their grandchild/grandchildren.  Prizes will also be given to the top three male and female runners and walkers over 50 years old in the one lap event.

Bring your grandchildren, your neighbor’s grandchildren or any children and be a part of this fun filled evening.

The 2002 White River Trail Run will take place June 1st and will be a 10K run/walk with a 1.4 mile fun run.  The race will begin at the Shadyside Park Activity Center and will include the trail through the wetlands over to a point past 10th Street Park, turn around and finish at the Activity Center.   Some of the Thursday night course may be included.  The Park Department has made the bathroom, shower facilities available to us. We hope the 10K scenic trail run will attract all levels of ability of both runners and walkers.  I will be contacting all of you that have offered to volunteer very soon.   Thank you, in advance, for all of your support.  There will still be spots for more volunteers if you are interested. You can acquire an entry form on the ARRC web site or at the Thursday night races.  Please contact me if you have further questions or comments. Tommy Goodson, Race Director, 2002 White River Trail Run

About The Running Company and it’s Owners

"Individual service is the cornerstone of The Running Company's corporate philosophy. Each customer is given the opportunity to have their running or walking form bio-mechanically analyzed using our in-store treadmill. Every customer will be treated with respect and enthusiasm regardless of their ability level or experience as a runner or walker."

"Bob Kennedy is arguably the best distance runner that the United States has ever seen.” While obtaining his bachelor's degree in Finance from Indiana University's School of Business, he won twenty individual Big Ten Championships, four individual NCAA Championships, made the 1992 Olympic Team and was ranked #1 in the U.S. for the first time.  Since that time, Bob has set multiple American Records at 3000 meters and 5000 meters, been ranked #1 in the U.S. for eight of the last nine years, finished 6th in the 1996 Olympic Games at 5000 meters and has been ranked as high as #4 in the World.

Ashley Johnson matriculated from Dale College Boy's High in South Africa in 1979. He went to Western Kentucky University on an athletic scholarship and earned NCAA All-American honors in Cross-Country and the Mile.  After graduating from Western Kentucky University in 1985 with a Broadcasting degree, Ashley spent the next ten years pursuing his running career. During this time he was a successful fixture on the US Road Racing Circuit.  He was 3 times ranked in the Top 10 in the World Road Race Rankings by Track & Field News and Runner's World and finished his career with a 13th place finish at the 1996 US Olympic Marathon Trials."

2002 Road Series Running

Fifteen races will comprise this year’s Road Series.  The race dates are listed in upcoming races in bold print.  In addition to being a club member the participant must also join the Road Series.  Participants must complete a minimum of six races.  New for this year, is a mandatory volunteer position to be made by the participant at one of the listed races. This volunteer position will count in your minimum. However, you cannot accumulate points for both volunteering and running the same event.  Completion of the Indy Mini Marathon will result in 50 points being awarded the participant regardless of finish.  Any race director entered in the Road Series who has a race on the series calendar will receive 50 points.

2002 Road Series Walking

For the Road Series walking we are looking to start with a Women’s and a Men’s bracket.  If enough interest is generated a ten year age group bracket will be established.  In races with walking categories the participants will walk the distance designated. In races without walks, the walkers will walk the race distance. Further rules and clarifications will be made before the season starts. Please log on the ARRC website for updates.

The PACER is no longer being mailed to anyone who has not renewed his/her 2002 membership.  If you know of anyone in need of a membership application please direct him/her to our website, www.andersonroadruners.org .  Our membership list is updated prior to each PACER mailing and anyone who joins between mailings will be added to the future list.

Congratulations to Jim Hunter, one of Anderson’s newest business owners and an Anderson Road Runner Club member.  You can find Jim behind and out front of the counter at Blimpies Salads and Subs, located in the Cross Street Shopping complex.  The menu will satisfy any appetite and the service is fast and friendly. Good luck, Jim!

Training Talk…

“If you run or race early in the morning, you won’t have time to eat a substantial breakfast, but it’s almost always a good idea to get some basic carbohydrates into your stomach. Try a piece of toast, a bagel, an energy bar, or a banana. A small cup of sports drink will help you get through a short run.  If you’re running longer, try to drink more, for both the water content and the carbohydrates.” From Amby Burfoot’s Principles of Running
