President’s
Message
Challenges
facing ARRC
Everyone knows that club membership declined during
the 90s. Last year, we did rebound,
because people started to step up and become involved. This year and beyond, we need to re-examine
our purpose for being, re-think what we are about, and be willing to be more
than we have been.
A year ago ARRC committed to the road series idea to
promote the small town event, and encourage our members to take to the road and
have fun. We hope each of the series
events will be successful and have the numbers they need to continue. But just going to races for our own
satisfaction can no longer be enough.
Our mission as stated in the By Laws is “to promote fitness through
running”. While what we do has done
that, we see that area high school running programs are now competing with new
sports like soccer and softball, and some coaches are struggling to have enough
runners and financial support to keep their programs afloat. Running must be viewed as a basic sport and
fundamental to for the conditioning in variety of sports. Running is something we can adopt as a
fitness lifestyle and take with us for years of active and healthy living.
Our mission must also encompass the future runner
and that’s why we need to reach out to the youth. Yes, we already have our children’s program, and we intend to
continue. Yes, we already have high
school runners join us during the summer and that will continue. But those elements are not enough. The ARRC board now believes that we must
openly and systematically support the high school runners in our area. That’s why we have chosen to use the White
River Run as a means to raise funds for this purpose. That’s why we have approached area business with the premise that
we intend to establish a fund for both general support and for scholarships for
high school runners. That’s why we will
be seeking your ideas and financial support for our new purpose and plan. This year, we are announcing the plan, and
reformatting our sponsorship requests so that in 2001 we can be in position to
take positive actions. Run the Mounds will continue to support our children’s
program. We must invest in the youth,
the future runner, if our existence and purpose is to continue.
You can help
us in a variety of ways:
1. Renew your membership and
help recruit new members.
2. Support the club events by
either entering, volunteering or providing additional financial support.
3. Offer your help to an area
high school (or middle school) team.
4. Help recruit area business
that will support our new strategy.
Please contact an ARRC board member with your
comments or questions, we need your input and support.
See you on the trails,
Bob Hart,
President ARRC
Point races will begin on 11May and end with the 28 September race. There will be NO point race on 06 July. All races will begin at the Shadyside Activity area (old beach house). Frank St Phillips has steeped forward to direct this year’s Fun Run races for our children. Children are a very vital part of our club, not to mention the future of our running club. If you or a member of your family would be willing to assist Frank, please contact any officer or Frank at the race. The Children’s One-Mile Fun Run will also begin on 11 May 2000. Start time for the children will be 5:30 p.m. Restrooms and showers will be available.
The Anderson Roadrunner’s Road Race Series began April 22, 2000, with the Noblesville Sunrisers Kiwanis Spring Run. It is not too late to enter the series, however, in order for your points to accrue you must have your club membership and Road Series fees paid prior to the race you wish to have your points scored. A minimum of eight races must be run in order to qualify for an award.
21st Annual White River Run is scheduled for June 10, 2000. Start time from the Anderson YMCA will be 9:00 a.m. Distances for this year’s race will be 12K and 5K.

During late summer or early fall, the Anderson Road
Runners Club officers would like to hold a “Reunion Night” as part of our
Thursday evening Points Race. The idea
is to bring back former members of our club and reunite them with the current
members. If you have any suggestions,
comments and ideas that you would be willing to share to help bring this
thought to reality please contact Bob Hart.
It will not be long until the Run the Mounds race,
November 05, 2000. Race director, Bob
Hart, is already beginning work on this great trail run. If there is any member who would like to be a
sponsor or contributor for this event please contact Jim Hoffman, Bob Hart or
any officer. Levels of participation
are as follows:
Major
sponsor- $500.00 and above
Sponsor-
$200.00 - $499.00
Contributor- $50.00 - $199.00
Runners who want to run fast
must associate with what they are doing. This
means that they must focus on
their form, breathing, and feelings while
they run. They monitor signals
from all parts of their bodies that allow
them to run they’re hardest. -
