President’s Message

Hello everyone.  The calendar year is winding down fast, but still about 6-7 weeks of running to do, including the ARRC Turkey Trot.  Don’t forget that during the winter, you can find club members at Shadyside almost any week night around 5:00 or 5:30 and at Mounds on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

There is one remaining road series event – Kris Kringle – Dec 1st in New Castle.  Check the calendar for these and other happenings.

Thanks to all who made this year another success for ARRC.  Our membership has grown again and our both our two series and major events went very well.  In addition, ARRC members volunteered in area college and high school XC events.  We will officially celebrate 2002 at our annual meeting, February 6, 2003.  This will be at the Chesterfield Millcreek center.  Watch the web site and the news group listings for details.

In order for next year to be another great year for ARRC, we will need our member’s involvement.  This can be in a variety of ways:  board member, officer, race director (or assistant), committee activity, or just being a spot volunteer now and then.  Volunteering is beginning to catch on more and more, so please remember, the more who come forward, the less work it is on others and the more successful the club can be.  We definitely want to continue our youth initiatives.  Think about (or ask) what you can do to help your club and well all have more fun and be able to attract even more into our fold.

Run the Mounds Review

Run the Mounds proved to once again be one of Indiana’s best 5-mile trail runs. Despite undergoing a course change, due to safety and state requests, this year’s race was still challenging and well accepted.  Cool weather returned this year and rain threatened us, still over 225 runners and walkers were not discouraged from participating.

A good race is only as good as the director, sponsors, contributors and volunteers. Race director, Bob Hart, has a TERRIFIC group to offer just such a race. Without one of these groups we would not be able to offer the event and all the amenities that bring such a fine cast of runners/walkers to the Run the Mounds each year.

Thank you to all the following for making the Run the Mounds 2002 another great trail run and walk.

Notes for the present…

Greg Smith, co race director with Wally Post for the Road Series has been appointed to the at-large position, recently vacated by Daneen Colligan.  Daneen has had a very busy schedule this past year…

We wish Daneen all the best and hope to have her running with us again in the future.

Thanksgiving Turkey Trot will be held on 28 November at 8:00 a.m. Run will start and finish at the Shadyside Activities Area. The course will be two laps around the lake. Entry fee is $3.00, payable morning of race. Registration begins at 7:15 a.m. Cut off time for entry is 7:50 a.m. sharp! What better way to make room for the pumpkin pie with whipped cream?

This year’s annual Christmas party will be held in the pavilion at Mounds State Park, Tuesday 09 December 2002, at 6:00 p.m.  Please bring a double-sized covered dish, dessert or salad, drink and table service. ARRC will provide the meat. Memberships for 2003 will be accepted at the party.

Again this holiday season, we will have a Christmas Lights Run/Walk on Thursday, 19 December at 5:30 p.m. Plan to join us in the parking lot of Rax Downtown. The course will be determined that evening, however, we will not exceed one hour of running/walking. After the run/walk we will return to Rax for a bite to eat. Please check the ARRC website for more complete details. Wear your bells, antlers, or best Christmas mittens! Contact Bob Hart with any questions.

HUFF teams are forming for this year’s race, which will be held on Saturday, 28 December.  If you would like to be part of a team or have a team in place and want to travel as a group contact, Robin Gerhart.  This is the race you will talk about for days, weeks, months and years!  Don’t miss your opportunity to be a part of team in an event to talk about forever! And if you decide to go it alone (50K) we will be there to help you out and then talk about your effort for years to come!  Entry deadline is 01 December to avoid price increase.

Notes for the future…

2003 Annual meeting is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, 06 February 2003, at 6:00 p.m.  We will meet at the Millcreek Civic Center. Showers will be available to anyone wishing to run prior to the meeting. Proposed by-law changes will be posted on the ARRC website in January. Please review these proposed changes prior to the annual meeting, as the membership will be asked to vote on these proposed changes/amendments. ARRC will furnish meat for the dinner. Each member is asked to bring a double-sized covered dish, salad or dessert, along with table service and drink. Further information will be available the next PACER and also on our website, www.andersonroadrunners.org

Running up front…

The quest for a spot on the 2004 United States Olympic team continues for Kyle Baker.

Below is the article published in the Indianapolis Star regarding Kyle’s first marathon on 14 October 2002, in Chicago, Illinois.

olympic and amateur sports: David Wood

Former state track champion excels in first marathon

It was a cold late-April day in Hillsdale, Mich., that was going to determine Kyle Baker's future. He had been running so long that he was running out of patience.

"Before Hillsdale, I said, 'If I don't have a good race here pretty soon, I'm going to retire. I've put in all this work, and I'm not getting the results that I want,' " he said. "One race can turn things around, and it did."

Baker, a 1994 state 1,600-meter champion for Anderson Highland High School, ran to a personal best of 28 minutes, 34.79 seconds in winning the 10,000 meters that day. He capped a superb season Sunday by finishing 12th in his marathon debut. His time was 2 hours, 14 minutes, 13 seconds at Chicago, making him the fourth-fastest American of 2002. "I'm probably the happiest I've been in my life," said Baker, 26.

Baker is an assistant coach at Michigan State, his alma mater. The school allows him flexibility in his schedule. Rather than join a training group like so many other runners, he works out alone and is mostly self-coached. After starting college at Ball State, he transferred to Michigan State, where he became a four-time Big Ten champion. He never made an impact nationally and always believed that he could achieve more. He increased his mileage and reduced weight. The 6-2 Baker is at 145, about 10 pounds less than what he carried in high school. "I worked pretty hard, but not as hard as I could have," he said. "Knowing what I know now, no wonder I didn't have great, great results. "If you always do what you've always done, you're going to keep getting the same results. I'd have a good race now and then, but I never made huge steps."

It has been a huge year for American marathoners. Moroccan-born Khalid Khannouchi set a world record of 2:05:38 at London in April, and then won his fourth Chicago Marathon in 2:05:56 in windy conditions. The second American at Chicago was sixth-place Alan Culpepper, whose debut marathon was a 2:09:41. Also running his first marathon was Notre Dame graduate Ryan Shay, a former NCAA 10,000-meter champion who finished 15th in 2:14:30.

Baker had an epic 20-kilometer duel Sept. 2 at New Haven, Conn., finishing one second behind Dan Browne. Browne proceeded to clock 2:11:35 at St. Paul, Minn., becoming the first U.S.-born male to win a major North American marathon since 1993. Baker has a better chance to make the 2004 Olympic team in the marathon than in the 10,000 but intends to run U.S. trials in both. Although his life has revolved around running for years, a renewed commitment made him realize he wasn't always so serious. "I thought I had it in me, or I wouldn't have kept doing this," he said.
