President’s Message

Well, another Run the Mounds with great weather!  I couldn’t believe the turn out.  I’m taking a break from my “results” work to write this article.  I’d have to look back for sure, but probably the best turn out in several years, about 424 finishers (runners and walkers).  Things were very hectic, but everyone was very accommodating and we got a lot of compliments.

We could not do this race without our sponsors and volunteers, so I’d like to devote some space to thanking everyone.  Our sponsors were:  Household Finance, radio stations (93.5 – 96.7 MAX Rock and Roll, WHBU 1240 and WERK 101.7 and 104.9), 1 2 One Promotions, Anderson Foot and Ankle Center, Standt’s of Anderson, Gwinn’s Drug Store, Barber Manufacturing, Surbaugh and Son, The Herald Bulletin, Citizen’s Travel, Baylor and Associates, and Star China.  The generous donations of these businesses make it possible for us to have an affordable race for the participants and give us much needed funds for important club projects.  Please thank and patronize our sponsors.

Each of the ARRC board members played major roles in this year’s race.  Tommy Goodson – volunteer recruitment, registration and finish.  Lori Goodson – Timer captain, registration, mail pick up.  Robin Gerhart – volunteer recruitment and registration, Jim Hoffman – sponsor contact, promotion, recruitment and course direction.  Daneen Colligan – pre-race registration activity.

Many club members and community volunteers significantly gave of their time, energies, talents, or served as captains.  Peggy Hart – pre race data entry and bookkeeper.  Greg Smith – finish line equipment and registration chair.  Steve Hedgecraft – transporting shirts, registration, official starter, and finish line.

Terry Spoo – course direction and finish line.  Kathy Wehrley – shirt committee and post race data entry.  Erica Stultz (A. U. student) – finish line.  Jamie and Barry Banks – refreshments and pavilion.  Fred Fulcher – water stops.  Tom Corda – course direction.  Mike Truman – course preparation.  Tim Thomas – course preparation.  Lonnie Smith – led race on 4-wheeler.  Jack Stepp – course preparation and 4-wheeler.  Wally Post – pre-registration activity.  Ingrid Childs – shirt design and award chairperson.  Evan Achenbach – official timer.  Diane and Charlie Mosbrucker – finish line.  Mike and Renee’ Porter – pavilion.  Judy Baylor – volunteer recruitment and registration activity.  Frank St. Phillips – Fun Run.  Lou Rae Downs was our event artist and did a great job on the owl.

Many others also helped with course direction, timing, and registration.  Also, our key suppliers gave us great service – Bush Trophy, Copy Connection and LM Direct.

Mounds Park staff, Madison County Emergency Management and Chesterfield Volunteer Fire Department, supplied logistics, coordination and support services.

It will be several days before we pay all the bills and determine the bottom line.  But, we will have the opportunity to add to the ARRC scholarship fund, support the 2002 ARRC children’s program, make our annual contribution to Mounds Park and hopefully add some to our general fund.  These decisions will be by the board and reported in a future newsletter and / or annual meeting.

Again, thanks to all who helped and participated in Run the Mounds.

Bob Hart

Local Ravens help Anderson University Harriers to strong finishes at the HCAC Championships held October 23, at Mounds State Park.  Four former local high school athletes made valuable contributions to AU’s cross country success at the meet-

Tyler Barker, freshman (Frankton High School)

Lisa Nicholson, sophomore (Highland High School)

Jeremy Pollen, freshman (Alexandria High School)

Amber Sigler, junior (Frankton High School)

Tyler ran over a 2 minute PR on the Mounds course to finish 40th overall in a time of 30:27. Lisa won her second consecutive conference individual title by defeating her nearest opponent by 14 seconds, in a winning time of 18:57.  Jeremy placed a solid 23rd place in 29:17, improving his time over 30 seconds from his first race at Mounds earlier this year. Amber ran a gusty race, running in spite of an injury. She still managed to place 4th overall in 19:25. This marks her 3 All-Conference Cross Country award in three years.  Congratulations to all four runners.

Men’s Coach of the Year- Larry Maddox and Women’s Coach of the Year- Josh Payne, Hanover

Special thanks to the Mounds State Park Staff for allowing Anderson University to host the meet.  It’s a great site for a cross country meet. Their assistance is invaluable.

Special thanks also to all the Anderson Roadrunners who came out and helped with the meet.  It’s great to have your support.

-Scott Wilson, Assistant Coach

For those members who do not run on a regular basis at Shadyside, you will find that the Anderson Parks Department has done a fine job of resurfacing parts of the path.  Work is still continuing on the path, but what a great surface to run on now.  Bob Kearns once again has marked the course along the side so runners can still keep their splits recorded.

Tips from Tommy:

·  Deodorant on your feet will help prevent blisters on long runs

·  Calcium helps ward off fat

Vice President’s Message

Drink more water, especially in the winter, bananas beat the blues, and eat oranges to keep colds at bay.  Sure we have heard it all before, but we need reminders, because we have heard so much, we forget the basics.

We had a wonderful season with new faces and new challenges and new goals to meet.  We have had ups and downs.  The desire to stay fit keeps us all encouraging one another.  That’s what makes the Anderson Road Runners Club so close.

I would like to propose that next year we remember to keep every run a social run as well as working towards the 20 race points series.  Sounds like a lot of fun, huh?!

Thank you to all that said prayers for me and thank you especially for the ones that told me so.  It has encouraged me a lot during my recovery.

Congratulations to all of you who finished a marathon this year.  Even one is an accomplishment. To those of you who are new to the running scene, good job!  It requires a lot of self-discipline and determination to keep going.  Enjoy every run and put some miles in the bank for the winter months ahead.

I would like to especially thank Doug Townsend and Kent Lockhart for doing an outstanding job of keeping our points scores straight!  It requires a lot of time and commitment and I, as well as everybody in the club is very appreciative of your efforts.

I will hopefully see you on the road again soon!

-Tommy Goodson

Without financial support from members and “friends of the running community” the Anderson Road Runner’s Club could not offer the White River Run and Run the Mounds races.  Along with financial support we have a great volunteer group to make both of these races first class events.  Whenever possible, please patronize and offer a word of thanks to the individuals and businesses that make these two events possible:

Hoosier Park  *** ALAC Garment Services *** Anderson Center for Sight *** Gwinn’s Drug Store

A2Z Promotions *** Art’s Trim Shop *** Dr. Gregory Busing *** Lutz Insurance

        Radio Stations MAX/WHBU/WERK *** Household Finance *** 1 2 One Promotions

Anderson Foot and Ankle Center *** Standt’s of Anderson *** Surbaugh and Son Realtors

Barber Manufacturing Company, Incorporated *** The Herald Bulletin *** Baylor and Associates

Citizens Travel Service *** Star China and Housewares

Recovery and Rest Team-

     Tommy Goodson

     Karen Taylor-Smith

This is a group that no runner wants to be in at any time.  But we can keep them aware of how important they are to our club and let them know they are in our thoughts and prayers for a thorough and quick recovery!
