President’s Message

If you have not been to Shadyside or participated in the road series this year, you have missed some fun.  Our attendance has been great; we have several new members running and walking with us.  On August 9th, ARRC staged its second annual reunion night.  Several past presidents, members and friends attended.  We presented lifetime club memberships to Sandy Ferris and Fred Fulcher.  Both Sandy and Fred have given several years to the benefit of the club and to running.

Most everyone has seen the evidence of trail maintenance activity at Shadyside.  The Park Department is repairing erosion damage, fixing bad places in the trail and also plans to do some limited resurfacing.  So far our runs have not been disrupted, but if we have to make any accommodations to help the maintenance people, we will.  Listen for announcements on Thursdays or check the web site.  ARRC is very appreciative of the Park’s efforts to make the trail safe and more enjoyable to all users.

On September 20, 2001 ARRC will be present at the County High School Cross Country Meet at Pendleton.  As a part of our strategy to reach out to the youth, we want to show area high school runners that we support them.  We will have a table of fruit and drink and be there to cheer and support all of the fine runners of Madison County.  We will need six (6) or more volunteers to either help at Pendleton with the meet or to help at Shadyside to fill some gaps left by some of us that will be gone.  Any approved volunteer helping on September 20th will receive 50 points if they give up their one lap race.  First come / first served.  See or call Bob Hart (643-6304) or Robin Gerhart (643-6617).

Community Project…

The Emergency Management Agency of Madison County could use the help of our club on Saturday, October 27.  They are working on a hospital exercise here in Anderson.  This exercise requires that volunteers dribble into the hospital emergency rooms.  A steady stream of "victims" is needed between about 6AM and 10AM with particular "symptoms" as given to the volunteers by EMA coordinators.   Time required is about two hours.  This group helps us each year at both WRR and RTM free of charge and it would be very nice if we could help them.  If you can be both a volunteer and a victim contact Bob at 643-6304.

Run the Mounds…

This will be the 20th year for the club’s flagship event at Mounds State Park.  The date is November 4, 2001.  By the time you read this, flyers will be available, along with information on the club web site.  Our wonderful sponsors help keep the price of this race very reasonable to runners.  Our tradition of designing and offering a high – quality long sleeve sweatshirt will continue.  The course will be well marked and, of course, the park always beautiful.    As always, volunteers are needed and they also will receive the shirt.  Many of the volunteer activities are things that can be done without having to give up the run.  Please consider volunteering or help to recruit a friend or family member to help us.  If you can be of assistance just contact one of the officers.

To our area middle school, high school and university cross country teams,  Anderson Road Runners wish you a great running season!

Bob

Notes from the past…

Past club member and Highland graduate Kyle Baker recently competed in the Meijer Golden Mile in Traverse City, Michigan.  The race is a straight mile on the road and Kyle won the event in a course record 3:55.  The former record holder was Olympian Paul McMullen.  Kyle defeated the past two Golden Mile champions - Kenyans Ben Kapsoiya and Amos Kipyegon, who were second and third.  He is currently working for Michigan State University as recruiting coordinator for the track team.  Also, he recently competed in the 5000 meters at the U.S. Outdoor Nationals in Eugene, Oregon and won both the 5K (14:12) and 10K (31:00) at the same road race in Michigan.  Congratulations Kyle!

                                                2ND ANNUAL REUNION NIGHT

By Kevin Harry

Under threatening skies, the Anderson Roadrunners Club held its second annual reunion night at the bike path.  And although the weather was cloudy and steamy, the mood was sunny as old and new came together to recognize current and past members of the club. Those in attendance included:  Jerry Lacy, Luella Porter, Cindy Kennedy, Sandy Ferris, Wendell Parsons, and Jim Hoffman.  Many other supporters and volunteers were also on hand to enjoy the evening.  Special lifetime membership awards were presented to Sandy Ferris and Fred Fulcher.  Also, special recognition was given to the club's past presidents in attendance. Without these dedicated, past and present members, our club would not be the success it is today. Our sincere thanks to each
and every founding member that had the vision to begin something that would grow and produce new   generations of runners, keeping the sport alive and well in Anderson. Thanks to all in attendance.

Notes for the present…

Welcome to the following new members: Courtney and Stephanie Bartlett, Alan Bell, John Cogle, Peggy Hart, Marjorie Johnston, Judy Lawhon, Zach Nyboer, Lisa Phagan, Joan Sauter, Sherry Underwood, Betty Whitehouse, Scott Wilson and Jim Williams.  We are glad to have you join us!

Another big round of applause and thank you to the following persons and businesses for sponsoring a race during the Thursday night one lap series:  Tommy and Lori Goodson, Brian Sanders, James Leffler, Community Hospital, Bridges Massage Therapy, Bob Hart, Gene Chandler, Wendell Parsons and Bill and Pat Miller.  Your support is very much appreciated.

Without financial support from members and “friends of the running community” the Anderson Road Runner’s Club could not offer the White River Run and Run the Mounds races.  Along with financial support we have a great volunteer group to make both of these races first class events.  Whenever possible, please patronize and offer a word of thanks to the individuals and businesses that make these two events possible:

Notes for the future…

Road trip to the HUFF, again this year the Anderson Road Runners are planning to participate in the relay portion of this Ultra. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, 29 December 2001. If you have a team together, want to be part of a three-person team, or run the Ultra solo, why not join the winter road warriors of the Anderson Road Runners in traveling together. Should you want to participate in the ultra we would be glad to help “handle” your run.  Remember, this is the  character builder” race with friends.  Interested runners or teams contact Robin Gerhart at 643-6617.

Scott Wilson, Assistant Coach of the Anderson University Cross Country and Track Teams, is very interested in offering a running clinic to members of the Anderson Road Runners Club.  Due to scheduling, we have not been able to set an exact date or meeting place.  Please check periodically on our website and be listening for the date and time to be announced at our Thursday night races.  This clinic will provide very useful information to all level of runners.  Stay tuned for this great opportunity to learn from one of the best!
