Crisp
fall days are just around the corner; and I think we are all ready for it. But, before turning to the fall season,
I want to comment on how wonderful the summer has been. The Thursday night runs have been very
well attended, and we’ve had fun – so many new faces this year, including the
youth. Same with the road
series; ARRC presence at these
races has been very noticeable by those race directors, particularly at awards
time!! And finally, our informal
summer training groups have been especially well attended and fun– everyone
seems to be healthy and happy. A
great big THANKS to our race directors and volunteers.
During
the early fall, there will be several opportunities for ARRC members. In October, we start our Thursday post
season runs at 5:30 PM. Although
not decided yet, we usually shake it up a bit at Shadyside with some variety
runs – things like figure 8, staggered start, just show up and plan to have
more fun. After the end of
October, we put the clock away, but you can count on finding ARRC members at
Shadyside every Thursday throughout the late fall and winter. Keep it going!
Also,
during the fall, ARRC gets the opportunity to attend and help at some area high
school XC meets. We have been to
the Madison County meet (September 26th in Pendleton) twice, and
this year we are considering helping with the Olympic Conference meet which HHS
will host October 10th at Mounds. It is a fun way to see many of the high school kids in
action. We will announce exact
plans later.
Run
the Mounds – November 3, 2002.
Things are shaping up to be another great event. Look for the flyer in the mail or at
stores, workout clubs etc. We always
need volunteers. Please contact an
officer if you think you can help.
Some assignments involve activity prior to race day, or even race day
morning, so you don’t need to give up your race. If you qualify, you can earn road series volunteer
points.
Notes for
the present…
The October one lap
races on Thursday night will include a variety of runs, i.e. co-ed relay and
pair predictions. Due to the limited day light the races will begin at 5:30 p.m. each week in October.
Fun Run awards night will be held on Thursday, 03 October 2002. Please check the website for exact time. Plan to attend this fun, award filled event.
Thursday Night One Lap award winners please make certain that Bob Kearns has your clothing sizes no later than 31 October 2002. Please help avoid disappointment with your size. When talking to Bob, don’t forget to congratulate him on 50 years of marital bliss with his lovely bride Elsie!
It is the generosity of our club members that
makes the Anderson Road Runners Club a success. For some it is their time to help with our Children’s Run on
Thursday nights, for others it is trimming tress along a frequent running path,
providing water on a hot and humid night during or after a point race,
encouraging a new runner or walker, offering to run/walk with someone at an
hour when no one else is available, measuring a new race course, providing an
anonymous donation, sponsoring a Thursday night race, or offering to drive a
group of runners to an out of town race, stepping forward to fill an officer’s
post or direct a race. These are
just a few examples of the ways our members give of themselves in busy times to
makes this club such fun. THANK YOU ALL, FOR ALL THAT YOU DO!
Notes for
the future…
2003 Annual meeting is tentatively scheduled for
Thursday, 06 February 2003, at 6:00 p.m.
We will meet at the Millcreek Civic Center. Showers will be available to
anyone wishing to run prior to the meeting. Further information will be
available the next PACER and also on our website, www.andersonroadrunners.org
HUFF teams are forming for this year’s race,
which will be held on Saturday, 28 December. If you would like to be part of a team or have a team in
place and want to travel as a group contact, Robin Gerhart. This is the race you will talk about
for days, weeks, months and years!
Don’t miss your opportunity to be a part of team in an event to talk
about forever! And if you decide to go it alone (50K) we will be there to help
you out and then talk about your effort for years to come!
Running Around….
Riding around, says it best for the one of our latest
Anderson Road Runners road trips. This time the purpose was not to run or visit
a nearby running store, nor was it an early departure to make the race before
the temperature began to rise. We
began our expedition at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 27th, six
passengers, six bicycles and two vehicles headed for the Nite Ride, a 25-mile
bicycle ride throughout downtown Indianapolis. Upon arriving at the entrance to
the Major Taylor Velodrome we instantly realized that we had left Anderson none
too early for our 11:00 p.m. start time.
The field to the east and south of the Velodrome was quickly filling up
with the other estimated 2,500 riders for this year’s event.
After a quick trip to
the registration table, restroom and souvenir area, it was back to the parking
area to change clothes and set up the bikes for riding. Just like runners, you
see every type person, apparel and their own unique gear. A balmy 80-something evening, Sandi
Patti singing our national anthem over the speaker system and fireworks
illuminating the moon-filled sky preempted our start. Admittedly, riding at
night was causing me a bit of stress, as I am usually in my second REM state of
slumber by 11:00 p.m. Just like the Indy Mini, the crowd, the music,
excitement, and the sheer fact you get to participate starts the adrenaline
flowing and after five to ten minutes of trying to pedal and then stopping and
walking, the ride is on! Riding through streetlight lit streets of
Indianapolis, amid hundreds of other bikers, some passing you and you passing
some, the fresh warm air all around you and people on the streets and in cars
or front yards cheering you at midnight and later made the ride exhilarating,
fun, and easy.
Winding our way through the
luminario-lit grounds of the Indianapolis Art Museum brings us back towards the
Major Taylor Velodrome finish line complete with live music, fruit, iced soft
drinks and spaghetti! What more could one ask for at 1:00 a.m.!
Viva Las Vegas by Kevin Harry
Ahh,
sunny Las Vegas, Nevada. Debbie and I left Indiana where it was a mere 88
degrees with 70% humidity, and got off the plane 3hrs and 40 minutes later in
Las Vegas where it was 112 degrees and 19% humidity. But remember folks we are
talking "dry heat." Yeah, right!
One of the highlights of our trip was running with the Las Vegas Running Team. This friendly group of runners reminds me of our club in that everyone is friendly, and you’re made to feel very welcome regardless of your ability. This club meets every evening except Saturday, and is well supported by the community. On Wednesdays the club meets at Nike Town which is in Caesars Palace Forum Shops and the format goes like this: you arrive before 6 :00 p.m., and check in. There is no cost and all you do is sign a sheet. At about 5:50 p.m., one of the run leaders greets everyone and introductions are made. All out-of -towners are asked where they are from, and what experience they have running. On the night we were there one guy was from Seattle, and he was training to run the marathon there. Altogether there were about 15 to 20 runners, and walkers, and we had 2 distances from which to choose. A 3 or 5 mile out and back course took us about a block West of the Strip and was mostly shaded. And believe me the shade was much appreciated! They provided each of us a water bottle to start and then the official running team van met us half way for more water and to pick up anyone too hot to continue.
Afterwards, back at Nike Town, we arrived
hot, and tired, to a full table of post run snacks. Bagels, cookies, fruit, and
of course more water, all provided by the club. This is pretty
amazing, and it happens every night of the week from different locations
around town. We brought back information on the club and if you didn’t get a
copy of their club form, just ask Debbie or myself for one, or contact the
club at: www.lasvegasrunningteam.com
On the inside of their application is their
mission statement, in part it reads,
"The Las Vegas Running Team's mission is to promote camaraderie, encourage
friendly competition, and to improve the overall fitness level of the residents
of Southern Nevada." And at the bottom of the form it states, "
Visiting out - of - towners welcome." That pretty much sums up the
club. So the next time you’re in Las Vegas give this outfit a try, you
might end up feeling right at home.

Running up
front…
As long as information is available to me, it is my intent to share with you the successes of Kyle Baker, a current Anderson Road Runner member former resident and great cross country and track athlete at Highland High School, who is currently working to become an Olympic contender. It is people like Kyle who not only inspire our younger runners, but also keep us older runners going forward. Kyle decided to join the Anderson Road Runners on one of the hottest nights in July for the Thursday one lap race. Not only did Kyle beat the course record he set last year, he did so by 14 seconds! At the recent Crim 10-miler, Kyle finished seventh with a time of 47:55 (4:48 mile pace) an improvement of over 75 seconds from his 2001 time!
BAKER BATTLES LEADER FOR USA 20K, FINISHES 2NDNEW HAVEN (02-Sep) -- Dan Browne defended his USA 20-K title at the 25th running of this New England Labor Day racing staple, but he had a much harder time doing so this year. Unlike 2001, when he powered away from David Morris in the final miles, this time Browne had to battle Kyle Baker right to the tape before assuming the crown. "This was the hardest race I've ever run," said Browne, in the midst of 120 mile per week training for his marathon debut at Twin Cities. "Give Kyle a lot of credit - he pushed me right to the line." Baker, third at Bix in July and the top American at the Crim 10 Mile last week, broke apart a pack of two dozen of America's best distance men with a 4:32 sixth mile, then dueled with Browne the rest of the way to keep the outcome in doubt until the final stride. The pair exchanged the lead no less than seven times in the last two miles, with neither able to establish a decisive margin. The intensity of their battle showed in the splits; the first half was run in 30:03, the second, over a more difficult part of the course, was 29:19. Browne's time of 59:21 was just eight seconds off Paul Cummings' American record, set en route at the New Bedford Half-Marathon in 1987.
