President’s Message

1999 is quickly coming to a close and we look to a new era ahead. We have to feel good about the club this year, but there are new trails travel in 2000. This past year was a year of involvement and being willing to try new things. It was great to renew old friendships and meet new people. This next year we are again trying new things. The officer (decision making) board grows to seven people. The objectives are to involve more people in the running of the club and have a structure that, in the future, will give us a chance for more continuity from year to year. If we continue to spread out the internal workload, it becomes more manageable for more people to give us their talents - and makes the club and the running experience - better.

Our 2000 plans are to continue, but modify, the road series, continue the Thursday night series and to hold both the White River Run and Run the Mounds. Also, we hope to have some type of an Indy Mini / WRR training program. The concept here is to form a better support network for training and for avoiding injury. The Pacer will be produced every other month, and we (keep you fingers crossed) may get our own web site. The web site (and we are thankful for Evan Achenbach giving us space the past couple of years) will allow us to better communicate better with both club members and the broader running community. It could also save us on some of our mailing expense. Another change in 2000 will be to look for new sponsors, especially for Run the Mounds. Many of you know that due to a corporate direction change, Household Finance had to opt out after 17 years. If you have ideas about new sponsors, please call.

Give us you ideas, your talents if you can, but for sure give other runners your hand and your encouragement. Let’s rack up the quality miles in 2000 and take good care of those body parts. See you on the trails.

Bob

Notes from the Past…

1999 Annual Christmas Party

This year’s party started off on a high (sugar high) as the menu went from cold cuts and covered dishes to a dessert carry – in. There were many scrumptious goodies provided by our running bakers, however, too much of a good thing seemed to be too much for many of the members.

Award winners for the Thursday Night One Lap races received PolarTec vests for first place, shorts and singlet for second place and ARRC caps for third place. Jim Hunter, Frank St. Phillips, Keith McCool, Fred Sprague, John Primmer and Dennis Knapp need to contact Steve Hagensieker with regard to picking up their award.

Road Series winners received beautiful hand-crafted plaques. Special awards went to Keith Hamilton- Comeback Runner, Pat Miller-Most Improved Female, Gavin Korn and Terry Spoo-Most Improved Males, Jim Hoffman- Male Rookie of the Year, Nancy King and Donna Lockhart- Female Rookies of the Year, Greg Smith and Ingrid Childs shared the Jeff Bailey Award. Wally Post presented Evan and Sue Achenbach with the Director’s Award.

Officers for the 2000 season will be Bob Hart- President, John Stephenson- Treasurer, Jamie Banks-Secretary, Robin Gerhart-Editor, Steve Hagensieker and Jim Hoffman- at Large Board Members. The addition of the at-Large Members was voted on by the membership during the business portion of the meeting. Nancy King will serve as the Thursday Night One Lap race director. We are currently looking for individuals who will serve as vice president and Children’s Fun Run race director, respectively. If any member has a desire to serve in either position please contact an ARRC officer or at-large board member.

Notes for the Present…

It is not too late to renew or join and save on club memberships. Submit your application and payment no later than January 31, 2000 and save on individual and family memberships. Family memberships require an application for each member, you may pay with one check and photo copy as many forms as needed. The PACER will not be mailed to anyone not registered as a member after April 30, 2000. Save on membership cost and continue receiving your newsletter by submitting your membership today.

Our 2-lap races during the winter months December through March have been designated as fun runs. Each run will begin and end at the Shadyside Activities Center (volleyball courts and bathhouse) on the third Sunday of each month at 2:00 p.m. Our next run will be held January 16, 2000. December saw 3 officers only in attendance.

Training runs offer an instant support group for runners. Your goal may be to do a long event like the 15K White River Run or Indy Mini, or just get through those dreary winter months. The Anderson Road Runners already have a number of groups meeting regularly and hope to form one or two more. The following times and locations are available to anyone, of any ability and we would welcome your presence and participation. We will vary the distance and pace according to those present, but help you meet your goals.

Tuesdays 5:00 p.m. Shadyside Activities Center (old beach area)

Wednesdays 6:00 p.m. Track across from Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie

Saturdays 8:30 a.m. Mounds State Park - pavilion parking lot

Sundays 8:30 a.m. Mounds State Park – pavilion parking lot

11:30 a.m. Shadyside Activities Center

Also, any weekday evenings there is usually someone starting their run at the Shadyside location at about 5:00 p.m. Additional training groups could easily emerge on the other evenings/places (Mon - Wed - Thurs). If you are interested, just show up or call Bob Hart at 765-643-6304.

ARRC has a limited supply of running gear imprinted with the new logo for sale. Vests are $35.00, shorts and singlets at $16.00 each and caps, $12.00 each. Contact Steve Hagensieker for purchase.

Notes for the Future…

The ARRC Road Series will be offered again this year. Wally Post, series director, and officers are preparing this year’s racing events. The March – April issue will list all dates and races.

The Huff

Ten ARRC members and guests participated in the Huntington Ultra Frigid Fifty on December 18th. Most of us ran the relay (10.8 miles per leg). Bud Stiffler ran the ultra, 32.4 miles, which is 3 laps around the Huntington Reservoir. The teams were THREE GIRLS WITH SOULS- Nicki Hiday, Lisa Nicholson and Robin Gerhart, THREE GUYS ON A MISSION-Steve Hagensieker, Bob Maley and Ron Harmening and team TAYLOR-Jamie Banks, Karen Taylor-Smith and Bob Hart. Sandy Ferris did not run, however, she went along to cheer and encourage us along as we braved the elements!

Even though it was a frigid 20 degrees and dark when we arrived, the warming tent was abuzz with people and excitement. The tent, which was our hangout, had two warming pots, chairs, hot soup, cookies and many other food delights to take our minds off the chill outside. At the end of the tent were two large gargoyle - like statues about 2 feet high, these were the overall male and female winner trophy. We had never seen anything like them.

The course was mostly trails, not groomed like Mounds, but with challenging footing and enough hills over the 10 plus miles to make it taxing. We were greeted with two very nice aid stations along the way. While running the relay, all we had to remember was that we had to do only one lap. You really have to admire those ultra runners, by their third lap, they had to have been numb.

It was a fun group event, and we are planning to return next year. Thanks to Robin for planning and organizing the ARRC entourage - next year it may even be a larger. RRH
